1997 Gearing help/question

I have 97 with what I believe to be the 3.55 or a 3.73, I havent crawled under to look at the take and find out. But my question is this, I am running 33 all terrains. I do light trail driving, no mudding, and the rest she is a tar baby. I do want to build a 4.6 stroker over the winter, would I be better off with 4.11s? What can I expect as a difference with these (or a different ratio) will it make the power and mileage better or worse?

3.73 didn't come along until '98, '97 4.0L engine equipped TJs came with either 3.07 or 3.55. For 33" tires and 5-speed transmission, 4.56 is the optimal axle ratio when you have the 4.0L engine. :)

456 work great just have to change the speedo to get proper mph. They r bad ass gears.

Ok dumb question, do I regear just rear or front and rear?

Jerry Bransford 07-24-2012 10:20 AM

You have to regear both axles. If you couldn't spend that kind of $$$ all at once, you coud do just regear the rear first and then regear the front axle later, but you couldn't drive in 4x4 until both axles have been regeared.
