Bigger tires with no lift
 
I currently have P255/70R18 size tires on my 12' Sahara. I'd like to go with something a little bit bigger - does anyone have any photos of their JK with bigger tires, with no lift? It seems the two go hand-in-hand - you get bigger tires you get a lift. But I'm not so set on the lift quite yet. Thanks.

Check out the "sticky" up top the page.

A 33" will fit with wheels with 4.5 or less backspacing. Plenty have done it.

I ran 285/70/17 on my 07' JKU for over a year before I got the lift. I never had an issue of it rubbing, but only did light off roading. Nothing I would have to disconnect the front sway bar for.

Since then I have added a tf 2.5 budget boost and like the lift better.

Measured height difference of stock r17 to 33x12.50x15?
 
I happen to like the current height for getting in and out of my 12 JKU with my stock 17 inch P255/75/R17 with no lift kit. What's the height with 33x12.50x15 with no lift kit? Wherever you have measured: above the front wheel, the ground to the front door, whatever. TIA

I've seen plenty of people run 35's with no lift. Just need to trim some things to make them clear. Won't have the best articulation but it can be done

Honestly, that's the most onerous part of the process. :D My wife loves the Jeep at stock height...she's 5'8" and it's super easy for her to get in and out of without a lot of contortions (unlike our car). I know that if I spend the money on bigger tires, a lift or a combination that it will move the height out of that sweet spot...probably. Maybe a set of Ace sliders ICW the other mods so at least there's a step? Just a thought. Although, with 33" inch tires, the change will be small, .5-1" depending on the model in question and its actual height (depending on inflation pressure and what you were running originally). Ah, the price one must pay for more off road capability.

In my perfect world I would turn about 2000-2500 bucks into a new set of flares (because I have this thing where I do not like permanently modding stock parts) and 35" tires. I'd only get a little extra clearance, but it would all be under the diffs as well as the body...then I'd probably do a little lift to get the frame and what not a bit more clearance...probably end up being about 1.5-2" under the diffs and 3.5-4 inches under the frame (and cabin/seats). To me, if the stock setup is the street biased do-it-all answer, that would be the off-road biased do-it-all setup. Alternatively, you could keep the lift, leave the stock flares and use 33 inch tires...maybe the most evenly balanced option of the do-it-alls.

I look at 37, 38 and 40 inch tire setups as off-road specific...not to say they're not streetable, but you are definitely paying for it in terms of fuel economy, acceleration, braking, tire wear (and cost) and general convenience (fitting into parking garages, loading and unloading, step in height, etc.).

Enough unsolicited advice/musings in one sport?

Quick question, I am thinking of installing Rubicon tires and wheels on my Wrangler Unlimited X. When going with bigger tires, do you have to switch any of the gears in transmission or differential? Do the bigger tires place more stress on these parts as they were designed for a specific size in mind? Any help would be appreciated!

No change. Just bolt up the new tires/wheels and call it a day.
