TJ tub trailer built (cheap)

hey guys, thought i would copy my build thread over to here..

this is and has been a slow build, i have done work and am awaiting money to buy steel to go on with the project.

tub is from a 2000, axle is from a 97, and frame is from an 03...
i do have a tailgate from a CJ-7 and plan to add some sort of trailer tongue tool box to the front...
anyways heres the build so far...

sparkyjeep 07-26-2012 08:23 PM

when i got the tub home

http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/...ictures003.jpg

there was some damage to the driver side (was crashed)

http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/...ictures005.jpg
http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/...ictures006.jpg

then i went back out there a couple of days later and picked up the frame, the jeep it was from was wrecked in front, i believe it is an 03 and newer tj? not too sure

I pulled the dash and some of the other junk out, the wire harness was still in the jeep but was cut or damaged somehow. so i cut it out as well.

sparkyjeep 07-26-2012 08:23 PM

i then cut out the embossed "jeep" out of the sides of the tub so i can incorporate them into the trailer.

http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/...ictures016.jpg

then was the time for the big cut...
i cut it part of the way through the door opening.

and thats where i am sitting now...

i do have the trailer "3 axis trailer coupler/ hitch" done, but i won't put pics up till i have it painted. i should have it done hopefully this weekend.
also, i did pick up the sheet metal to hopefully be able to cap the front and end up with the rough dimensions of the trailer. not sure when that will happen as of yet.
i do want to get out to take a part and get some of the YJ tub they have there to help ease the fab work a bit.
then i will need the metal for the floor, and the metal for the frame to make the tongue and then i need an axle, coils, and control arms.

as of right now, i plan to run stock TJ rear suspension unless i can't find it for cheap.
i have the debate of using a TJ rear end or using a trailer axle. not 100% sure yet... we will see what parts end up at my place...

sparkyjeep 07-26-2012 08:28 PM

i have since then picked up a used d35 with 4:10's and rear tj springs and a factory swaybar.

i am waiting to get some control arms as well...

its been a fun project so far... i will update as things happen...

cost so far:
tub w/title 150.00
frame w/tub 20.00
axle, springs and swaybar 50.00
i am supposed to be selling the front part of the tub with vin and title for 100.00

phritchey 07-27-2012 11:58 PM

Have fun with it, these are a blast to build, cant wait to see it finished :thumb:

JeeperJake 07-29-2012 08:11 PM

looks like fun.....stay busy!!!

photos....yes, more photos as you move along with the project !!!!

sparkyjeep 07-29-2012 08:38 PM

i will try to update this thread as i am able to work on it.. cash flow is slow, and so is spare time with my 7 month old daughter..

i hope to pick up some 2x4 box steel in the next 2 weeks for the frame. i want it towable by the 1st week of october... thats the plan anyways...

sparkyjeep 09-04-2012 07:59 PM

so, cash is slow coming in. i hope to sell off the front part of the tub soon (waiting on a buddy to buy) so i can get some steel... i figured i'd update... trailer is in the same spot as before with no work done..... hopefully i will get at it soon enough to get her rolling by oct. 13th...

JeeperJake 09-24-2012 08:27 AM

Those tub projects always amaze me.....I lack the skills/shop/tools as well as the $$ to leap into such a deal.

Forward 09-24-2012 08:36 AM

Sweet. Sounds like you got a good deal on the parts up till now.

Robertlena2 01-09-2013 08:34 PM

yea, really good so far

Robertlena2 01-09-2013 08:35 PM

so far

Have you decided how you're going to close up and finish off the front of the tub yet?

Here's one way to do it - you could buy an end panel from the Dinoot fiberglass Jeep-tub trailer kit and use it on the front of the cut off Jeep tub. Here are a few photos of a trailer built that way with a Dinoot fiberglass front panel, this photo is after assembly, before final paint:

how much would a front panel run me?

You'd have to contact them at Dinoot Trailers - Dinoot Jeep Trailers to get a price for the single panel, but the entry-level fiberglass tub-only kit is $789, which consists of 2 end panels, 2 side panels and 2 inner fenders, so just guessing, $789/6 panels = $131.50 per panel. I don't know what the price really is, but that math should give some indication of the ballpark.

Just a thought, if you can get another tub for another great price, you could always cut them both at the door openings and combine the two, one facing forward and one regular and create a trailer twice as big but still small enough to manage. Just a thought. Other than that I can't wait to see your finished product, wish I had the space to do one myself.

This one's made from two tubs back-to-back. The front half is from an LJ and the back half is from a YJ. The inner fenders of both have been removed to provide for more room inside the trailer; new inner fenders made from trailer fenders have been put in, as well as additions to the floor where the big factory inner fenders were removed. Also it was easier to make new side panels than fill in four wheel openings; the new sides are 16-gauge steel (much thicker than the factory tub steel), and the top rails cut from the original tubs have been added to the tops of the new sides to finish them off in a factory way:

Tailgates on both ends are really hand for carrying long loads :)

An ha, I knew something put that idea in my mind! I remember reading your builds a while ago now. Very nice work.

Sgtnitro 01-21-2013 02:42 PM

Very nice work indeed. I love your choice of color for the trailer too!

Yes, I built it. I've got lots of photos of it, but since this thread isn't mine and it's about Jeep-tub trailers and I don't want to hijack the thread I'll only post two photos with a trailer :)...

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...r/Tonneau6.jpg

To keep the thread on topic, this next photo shows the yellow trailer before it was painted. The red parts actually were left over from the pickup conversion, the black parts came from an 80's YJ, and the new side panels I made are still unfinished sheet metal:

jscherb,
i have yet decided what i'm going to do for the front to enclose the tub. i have an idea to make and build it my self just not sure if i want to go that route yet. i did build a trailer coupler using your "tractor supply parts list" its very similar but slightly different... i will get a couple pics of that up soon.
also, i haven't had much time to work on this and i'm still waiting on steel money. i do have the axle for it (4cyl tj rear axle) springs and a rear sway bar for the trailer...
still need control arms, and a track bar and shocks for the suspension to be complete.
i do have some 35's (used) for it as well, just need to pick them up.
then i need to make the body lift (1" will hopefully work) and get it mocked up to see if it will sit as high as the jeep.
oh, i need wheels too....
some day right?
thing i like about this kind of build, is that i can take my sweet time doing it.

I'd really like to see pics of how your "TSC 3-axis coupler" turned out... it's been a great addition to my trailer, I'm planning to build a second one soon for my other trailer. I've done a slightly updated set of plans and parts list that I'll probably post soon.

lawndog 05-29-2013 04:41 PM

any updates on your build

sparkyjeep 05-30-2013 12:59 PM

unfortunately no, i am broke.... supposed to pick up tires for it soon tho...

sparkyjeep 08-16-2013 12:53 AM

just an update, i have secured some steel to build the tongue and front end of the frame for the trailer, just need to go pick it up soon.
the tub has been laying in my back yard since last winter, i hope to get back on this very soon.
i also have a set of lower control arms as soon as i rebuild a set of rubicon express lowers for my jeep.

sparkyjeep 10-30-2013 10:15 PM

ok, a lot has happened in grabbing up parts for this build.. I have secured steel and got it to the house (freebie), got a set of wheels (may sell 2 of them) for the trailer( traded some sway bar discos for them)... I got a pair of upper control arms (ended up being a freebie)
so, all I need suspension wise is a track bar! I have a line on one, but will find out if its possible.

here is a approximate total so far:

tub 150.00
frame (firewall back) 20.00
upper control arms free
lower control arms free
wheels (traded swaybar discos) freeish

trailer axle (d35 w/4.10)
rear tj springs 50.00 for all 3
rear swaybar with end links

steel and supplies to build 3 axis trailer coupler 60.00 ish? (approx.)
sheet metal to cap front of trailer 50.00 ish? (approx.)

possible line on:
2 roller 35 inch tires

Need:
rear tj track bar (stock)
10 lug nuts

that's all I can think of right now, I will update soon as I plan to get started on piecing together the frame and tongue soon!
as you can probably tell, I am very excited to get back on this project. hope to update in the next few weeks...

sparkyjeep 11-02-2013 07:35 PM

picking up some 35's for the trailer on Tuesday morning, they are used and will be perfect for the trailer...
also, I just secured a metal brake, nothing heavy duty but its supposed to work up to 19 1/2 inches for sheet metal...

Jeeper4life 11-17-2013 09:56 PM

Did you get all this stuff from dirty dan?
