My planned music setup, what do you all think?
So like many of you, my current sound system is shot. The guy before me took out the dash speakers, put crappy ones in the sound bar, and blew his custom 10" sub in the back. I have decided to replace everything and being the fact this is my first time ever installing radio equipment, please tell me what you think.

Head unit.

Sony DSX s200x. Sony DSXS200X Digital Media Receiver with iPod Direct Control via USB: Car Electronics

No brainier for me as I have all my music on a 80g iPod classic and now I don't run the risk of CDs being stolen

Front speakers

Fosgate 152-s. Rockford Fosgate Prime R152-S 5.25-Inch Component Speaker System: Electronics

I will be mounting the tweeters most likely on the jeep right inside the door in a "tweete kicker" kind of thing. Has anyone else mounted composite speakers in the dash on a TJ?

Sound wedge speakers

Fosgate r165-3way speakers. Rockford Fosgate Prime R1653 6.5-Inch Full Range 3 Way Speakers (Pair): Electronics

I didn't go with component because it seems to me that separate tweeter placement would be tough since I only have the wedgies and no the bar.

Now here is the tricky part, all that costs right at my 300 budget, but I have this amp:

Kicker ix252
Kicker Impulse IX252 25W x 2 Car Amplifier at

It seems to be under powered for today's subs, is ther any sub you all recommend that can be used with such a small amp?

Get anything except the Sony deck.

Jma20a 07-28-2012 12:17 PM

all sony car audio is garbage. the speakers are not too bad, and that amp puts out a 60 watts rms. there is no sub out there that runs on less than 150 watts.

you can use the amp to power the components you plan on installing. and you can easily mount the components to the sound bar. its what it did.

all you need to do to mount the tweeters is to cut a small hole in the padding about 1/2 the size of the tweeter, than you will need to drill a small hole for the speaker wires and a small hole for the tweeter mount.

3 Attachment(s)
Thanks for the heads up about the sony. I have some problems with the sound bar and tweeter placement as I only have the sound wedges and they barely fit the speakers and lights! How close can you put the tweeters to the 6.25?

Attachment 145110

Also, have either of you guys mounted tweeters in the front yet? I am thinking of putting them around this drain plug here:

the only good spot for tweeters up front is the corners of the dash wedged into the corner. and with the sound pods you dont have to have the tweeters pointing down like the speaker, you could have them on the side of the pods. most component sets come with few different mounts, some have the directional mounts so you can point them where ever you want. i would stick with just a regular set of speakers on the front, the sound pods are closer to your ears so that when you take the top down you can still here them loud and clear.

TBH I think I am going to to with coaxial all around. Ok back to the head unit, most seem to be putting out 50 amps over 4 channels, is that enough to power these speakers, or will I have to buy an amp?

Rockford Fosgate 6.5 3 ways Coaxial
40 Watts RMS
80 High

Rockford Fosgate 5.5 2 way Coaxial
35 RMA
70 high

Like I said, will the atypical 50-60 Watt head unit handle these speakers or is an extra amp almost necessary?

Might I suggest you stay with your original plan to go with components up front? High frequencies are very directional, so you want the tweeters pointed at you. For an accurate sound, the components are the way to go in our Jeeps. Check out my post about the basics on TJ sound systems...

Personally, I would amplify them if you have the budget, your volume and clarity will be drastically increased over running them with your deck; the radio's "50w x4" is a max rating, the continuous power will be closer to 18-20 watts. Most 4 channel amps have at least 40 watts continuous per channel, so it's roughly double the power of most decks.

Also, I work in the car audio industry, and would have certainly recommended rockford fosgate two years ago, but they switched production to mexico not too long ago, and the quality has certainly suffered. The Sony deck is OK, but consider looking into a nice Alpine, like this one. Alpine's sound quality is second to none, IMO.

Pioneer and alpine are my top 2 for headunits. Ive run infinity speakers and like them alot, not the low end like the reference. I run the kappa perfect components and with the right amp they sound amazing.

0iii0 07-30-2012 07:19 AM

so which speakers are the best bang for the buck?

eboven 07-30-2012 09:36 AM

Alright, so around the same prices as the ones you were looking at, here would be my recommendation.

Front Speakers:
Pioneer A-Series 5 1/4" component speakers I have the D series in my Jeep (one step up from these) and love them, Pioneer makes a great sounding speaker!

Rear Speakers:
Pioneer A-Series 6 1/2" coaxial speakers

Alpine media receiver

Front speaker brackets

Front speaker baffles

I would run the front speakers off your little two channel amp, should be good, clean power for those; run the rear speakers off the Alpine's radio power. If you think you still need a sub, than you really will need a bigger amp anyway, so I would look into an Infinity Basslink or something of the sort to keep as much storage as possible.

So this is my finalized set up

Sony DSX S200X- I love this tune tray idea! Great price on eBay, 90 shipped .

Soundstream STL4.500 - great quality amp pumping 80w RMS at each speaker

Polk DB521 - high quality and good speaker

Polk DB651 - great speaker for sound bar

MTX front mounts

Putting the total at $350 including a wiring harness and a wiring kit (8/16 gauge)

I plan on manufacturing a under dash mount for the amp. BTW the amp is crazy small, about as long x wide as 2 PS3 controllers in front of each other! What do you all think?

Jma20a 08-10-2012 09:24 PM

Dont go with sony!!!!!!!

Agreed. Spend a tiny bit more and get a Pioneer single DIN unit. You will thank us later.

eboven 08-12-2012 05:55 PM

Honestly, in the last year of product lines, I would say Sony has surpassed Pioneer in overall quality... Pioneer really cut a lot of corners on their newest decks; things like fewer pre-outs, no illumination wire even on high end single din's, and just a lesser build quality overall. Alpine remains on the top of my list, with Kenwood coming in a close second. The Sony deck you picked out actually looks pretty decent, and I would personally rather have that one than a newer Pioneer with comparable features.

Jma20a 08-12-2012 08:29 PM

not sure about the latest pioneer units but my unit(6 years old) has far more standard features than sony does. ipod/sirius radio/bluetooth/hd radio/4 volt pre-amp outputs for front rear and sub/built in variable high-pass filter and variable low-pass filter/8 band eq/22rms power/auto adjust audio settings(balance and fade)with an optional microphone. you cant tell my a $250 sony can beat that.

Jma20a 08-12-2012 08:36 PM

and is only a single din

The Sony unit is 100 shipped on eBay and has all that, with 17RMS power, 7 channel EQ and the rest is the same. Like I said, I am only spending 300 total. I would much rather get some good speakers, good amp, and 4/5 head unit, than spend it all on a head unit!
