TJ for $10k-$15k?

I am in the market for a new car, and I really want to get a Wrangler. It's been my dream car for as far back as I can remember. My budget is between $10k and $15k.
Can anyone tell me if I can get a TJ in great condition for this budget? I don't want to buy something, and then have to replace the entire engine or something like that in a month's time.
And, what are some common problems that I need to look for in TJs?
Thank you!

If its from a dealer make sure the price fits what the tjs conditions.. I searched for a very long time for one and seen some rip off prices. Seen some with 100k miles go for the same price as one with 30k. I was looking nationwide maybe that's why due to demand in area

I picked up mines last week w 57k miles w tires and lift 2005 for 16ish k

For the higher end of your price range I would look into the TJ unlimited or LJ... A little more room and a little better of a ride.. Plus they look sweet with a 4" life and 33's or 35's.

LilYeller 07-28-2012 08:09 PM

You should be able to get a nice TJ for that amount. Something I would recommend looking at is the undercarriage. Check for scrapes from rocks, dented cat or exhaust tubes, and rust. Main place to check for rust is between the frame and the tranny skid, for some reason it really builds up there. GL on your purchase and post up some pics of possible purchases and we can give you an idea of its worth.

Thanks guys! Ya, I just don't know exactly what good prices are because kbb values for wranglers are way off what they actually are.

Don't forget to check Craig's List. Found my 2006 TJ Rubicon in February of this year completely stock 32,800 miles one owner for $16k asking price

jordan1996 07-28-2012 08:54 PM

Hey where are you from I'm in Australia and trying to sell mine

mdslater 07-28-2012 08:58 PM

Haha, other side of the world, San Antonio, Texas.

gulfrunner 07-28-2012 09:17 PM

Hey mdslater, I had been looking for a long time too. I purchased one, it is a 2005 with 75K. with everything I ended up paying 16K. The company where I found it was out of Houston. Not to advertize for them, but it was Select Jeeps. They had a real good inventory. I had looked on line at their inventory and made a trip and was able to test drive way to many. People were really nice to work with.

I bought my tjx last april for 8000 bucks looked like new 70000 mls

all i did is change all oils , lifted it with ome kit , added rims and 31/10.5s tires, bumpers, rock sliders , nice sound system ,lites, window sliders .
Ran it to a 100,000 mls no problems .
My sons had to crash that jeep last week .
Insurance gave 11000 bucks .

leaving at 430am to pick up my new 04 yellow rubi 70,000mls .
bone stock .
bought the recked tj for salvage 1700 sold the motor and trans 900 so far
Ill be swapping out parts next weekend .
I hope the boys can keep the Rubi shiny side up .

I picked up my 2006 TJ (X model) with 68k miles for $10.6k. It was in very good condition and runs great. The paint is nice and shiny, no rust and every thing feels solid. fenders were a bit faded, but what Jeep doesn't have faded fenders?
Only issue so far has been a brake caliper locked up on me a few nights ago. Two new calipers at $20 each and all is good again.

Bought my wife's 2004 TJ 4.0/Auto with 122k on the clock and paid $8k. All the zippers are a PITA but usually it stays in the garage with the top and door uppers off anyway.

2005 JEEP WRANGLER 6C RUBICON 05 Rubi for $15k!!! STEAL!!!!

Here is a start.... go find a Sport or Rubi...

XJ Knight 07-29-2012 10:27 AM

LJ's within 200 mi radius
2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
◄►2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
2004 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED
2005 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED

Do note there is a Jeep specific dealership in Leauge City Tx but after 5 or so reports of really bad experiences with sales personel and vehlcile quality there I do not recomend bothering with them

Frshmt 07-29-2012 10:33 AM

I would strongly urge you to go with the LJ, also known as the Wrangler Unlimited... only produced 2005-2006. The extra wheelbase and interior room sets it well ahead of the TJs.

Really? When I was looking for my wife's I was only seeing '05-'06. Glad you were around to clear that up.

I REALLY wanted to get her an Unlimited, but she was adamant she wanted the ugly ass electric lime green. The only one I could find was five states away and more than twice what we paid for her TJ.

Needless to say... she likes her ugly ass green TJ! :D

XJ Knight 07-29-2012 11:54 AM

lol. I passed the same one for sale everyday for over a year. My eyes were not happy with me as I wanted to not look but I couldn't resist. Yuk

It was the electric lime green '04 or a gecko green '12 for three times the price. I'll take that sacrifice any day of the week.

chainring 07-29-2012 12:23 PM

Just snagged a garaged, all stock 2004 LJ with 14000 miles for 16,950. You can definitely find a nice one in your range. Try to find single owner private sale, but you can sure find one that will serve you well. I used the adhuntr site to search all of Craig's List and kept an eye on eBay. Took a couple months, but eBay finally paid off. There are some really nice ones out there, so don't settle for just anything.

As others have stated patience and persistence.

Two years ago I got an '01. Was local, a woman who never left pavement, 1owner, Dana 44, Sport, soft top manual, 63K miles (if i remember. was low 60s) and I got for $11K

mdslater 08-01-2012 03:01 PM

Found one for 13k, '04, 80,000 miles, 4 cylinder, auto. What do you guys think?

XJ Knight 08-01-2012 03:08 PM

the 4cyl auto's are gutless turds. 13K is laughable. RUN

chop110 08-01-2012 03:09 PM

4-cylinders are slugs. Try to find an 4 liter inline six.

XJ Knight 08-01-2012 03:11 PM

Look at all the TJ's and LJ's in the links above. All if clean are winners

jasongind 08-01-2012 03:13 PM

I was able to pick up my stock '04 Rubicon w/ less than 95,000 miles for $10,000 from a VW dealership. Don't settle, find a real deal & what you want it you Romy be happy & end up spending more in there long run.
