Have 4.56s and 33s? How do you like it?

Getting ready to regear my 97 TJ 4.0/auto. Dana 30/8.8 axles. I plan on going with 33s. How does everyone like 4.56s and 33s on the highway without OD? Searched but seemed like everyone had OD or 5 SPD's.

Thanks
JR

If your auto is the 3spd you need to gear significantly higher tk regain power and this may be too large of a pinion for the d30 so you may need to swap to a d44

I just went on a 2600 mile trip with D44/D30 with 4:56 gears in a '99 with 4.0 and 3sp auto. It was great in the mountains while in 4 low. The drive out had me wishing I would have gone with 4:10. 65mph was about as fast as I ever went and that is at close to 3200rpm. A 12 hour drive at 3200rpm seems like abuse, but the Jeep never had any issues and performed very well. As I take on more challenging trails, I will probably love the 4:56 more, but I had a stock Jeep with us on the trails so we didnt get too aggressive with our trail selection. Plenty of power with the 4:56. When my buddy was struggling on the highway with his transmission constantly downshifting, I was just cruising along. I did only get around 12mph on the way out running 65. I slowed to 60 for the drive home and got around 14.

4.56 would be too low of a ratio for 33" tires and your 3-speed automatic, go with 4.10. 4.56 is only appropriate for 33" tires when you have a manual transmission. Only go with 4.56 if you plan on 35" tires in your near-term future. :)

4.56's is the way to go flyboy367.... I run a 2004 X 4.0 5 speed on 33's and 4.56's is perfect for all around use.... if I were to stay off the freeways ( which I don't ) I would go 4.88's for the offroad advantage of lower gears.

I pull around 2500rpms at 65mph on the freeway and maintain that on some pretty good grades in North Reno.
