4-banger 4-gears!?!?!

Just a question probably stupid but I don't know so...

I was going on a trip and realized that I was hittin the same high speed in 4th gear as 5th excluding if i went higher than 75mph. Some one told me that 5th gear is just over drive for like crusin... my question is, is it true about the 5th gear?

If you are running 33's and still have 4:10's 5th gear is outta your range except downhill with a good tail wind. Even with my 30's 5th gear is not used much on the interstates where any kind of up hill or stiff head wind is involved.

I only used 5th at 50MPH or faster, but that was a 6cyl.

DAMN I MISS MY JEEP!

Are you talking about a manual trans. I don't think the automatic has 5th does it? It has an over drive, but it drives very different from the manual.

My 4cyl. with 4:88's and 32's really utilizes 5th well especially on the freeway.

The '98 automatic doesn't even have a 4th gear, let alone a 5th. It is a 3-speed automatic with no overdrive at all. The Wrangler didn't get a 4-speed automatic where 4th is an Overdrive ratio until 2003. :)

Yes, 5th is an overdrive gear. All overdrive means is that when you are using it, the output shaft will spin faster than the engine rpm.
