15 or 19 gallon tank ??

I am trying to figure out which tank my new to me 97 TJ is equipped with, It's an SE and from what I've read the 15 gallon was standard, and 19 was optional. When I filled up this morning, the guage was showing just touching the red area, I assumed I had at least 2 gallons of fuel remaining, and the trip odometer was at 225 miles.

It took 14.8 gallons to fill her up. So that leaves me thinking that either the fuel guage is terribly misleading, or I do, in fact have a 19 gallon tank. Is there anyway to know for sure ? By VIN# or other identifying means ?

thanks

On the drivers side of the tank you should see a stamp like this:

Then cross reference the number with this chart:

thought it was the same tank. I read a thread that the differeance is the filler neck length. You can remove the neck and trim the length to get the added capacity. I am at work so I am not going to search for you here. I believe the thread with pictures was posted on a different forum, so google it.

Dextreme,

Thanks ! That's exactly what I was looking for. It's a 19 gallon tank.

I think all the tanks are the same but it is the vent tube that keeps the “15 gal.” tanks from filling to 19 gal. Besides the vent tube the gauge sending unit (part of the fuel pump module) is different to show “full” at the 15 gal level. There are threads that describe how to mod the vent tube is get 19 gal. If you don’t change the sender it will show full until you drop below 15 gal.

If you got 14+ gal in with it barely on the red you probably have a 19 gal tank or a 15 that has been modified. The gauges are known not to be accurate but usually not off by that much.

To see which tank version you have you can get a build sheet from jeep which should have that info. Have the VIN & go here:

The only important factor is when the gauge reads E you get gas.

I have this jeep also. The 15 gallon tank is standard, the 19 gallon tank is an upgrade. You need to be aware that there was recall on the "fuel send unit". It's not a big deal at all, and many people don't get the recall work done, but it might cause your fuel guage reading to be off by a few gallons. So your confusion might be justified. The only way to be certain which size gas tank you have is to top off your gas tank, and drive around until you run out of gas. You will of course need to have a back up 1 gallon gas can with you in your jeep. Then go immediately to the nearest gas station and fill up completely. Your gas purchase will tell you how big your gas tank capacity is, plus or minus half a gallon.

I wouldn't advise getting the recall work done on the fuel send unit, if it doesn't bother you the way it is. The garage might accidentally knock something else loose in the process.

The typical TJ fuel gauge sender is highly pessimistic and will read Empty well before it is actually empty. When my gauge's pointer is down in the Reserve area below the Empty mark, my tank still has 3-4 gallons left in it... which is more common than not where the TJ is concerned.

If you still want to know exactly how far you can go when that fuel warning light comes on, especially in a remote location, then you need to do a test run like I said above, and take notes from the odometer. Then you know exactly what you've got left in the tank, whether you do the recall or not.

Well, I got my build sheet from Jeep today.....

And darn if it doesn't say that I have a 15 gallon tank. The cross reference chart provided above indicates that it's a 19, though. I guess someone could have switched it out over the past 15 years ?

The build sheet on my '99 SE said the same thing...a 15, yet I have the 19.
