CombatChuk's build thread
Thought I was going to do this next year, but it appears that due to a new job (That pays way more than my old one) and how fast the stock BFG M/T tires are wearing out on my Jeep (Probably have 8k miles left) I've decided to move up building up my Jeep to September. Also the fact that crunch the heck out of the transmission cross member wheeling a few times, it's time to add some lift to my Rubicon.

First mod is already on the way, it's a simple one. I'm replacing the Silver Wrangler Unlimited and Rubicon Hood decals with Mopar Black ones. Honestly with how bright Cosmos Blue is, it should have been Black in the first place.

Second mod, is to paint the Jeep emblem on the grill black. Just need to set the time aside to pull it off, rough the chrome up with sand paper paint it black and add some semi-gloss clear coat on top to make it look good.

Now here comes the fun bits. I'm pretty much decided that I'm going to run Goodyear Duratracs (Tread lightly rebate kinda helps) at 315/70/17 size.

Wheels I decided long ago lol (When I had my 07 JK I loved these wheels but I cheaped out and got Steelies) But I'm a fan of the American Racing Mojave w/Teflon wheels. It doesn't look like they make a 17x9 size but I think at 17x8 they should hold the big ass Duratracs just fine.

I've been agonizing over the lift that I was going to choose, but I think I settled on the Rock Krawler 2.5" Max Travel kit. Being able to correctly set the Caster on the front axle and rear pinion angle on the rear axle (Because of the lower control arms front and rear it comes with) really appeals to me to somewhat retain the stock suspension geometry. I'd also probably go with the Bilstein 5100 series shocks for the lift.

Now the tires and the wheels I'm probably just going to egg Discount tires on to order and negotiate the price. The suspension bits I'm not sure, the prices vary wildly from vendor to vendor. So if you've have the Rock Krawler suspension in your Jeep let me know which Vendor you got them from and if you got a good price.

When the sun come back up, I'll upload a picture of my Jeep on the Driveway as a good "Before" pic.

Let me know what you guys think and happy Jeepin' everyone!

Sounds cool....interested in this build for sure.

I like build threads.

Looking forward to seeing the progress.

I'm in the process of doing my homework for my upcoming Jeep delivery and I've settled on the same lift and Jason at Krawl Off-Road has been very helpful. He seems to have the best prices I've found and also thinks of the small details that I had overlooked. Give him a shout for a quote and he'll likely be able to get prices on all the gear you've mentioned.

He mentioned I may want to upgrade from the Billy 5100s to the Fox IFP 2.0 shocks and I'll likely go that route. You may want to look into that. Don't forget about bump stops, an exhaust spacer, and perhaps front spring retaining clips.

Mopar Decals came in today! Saturday should be a good day to wash the Jeep and remove the old Silver Decals and apply the Black ones.

So I've run into an interesting dilema, Discount tires quotes me a price for 315/75/16 Duratrac tires at a price that was 40 dollars lower per tire. Both 315/75/16 and 315/70/17 tires are around the 34.5" mark so it comes down to rim size. I don't think it should really affect the ride too much, but what do you guys think?

CombatChuk 08-24-2012 09:13 AM

Screw it! Went through Discount Tire to get the 315/70/17 Duratracs and Mojaves ordered! The Wheels are on back order (1 of them at least), so it'll take a few weeks. But that's ok, I still need to install the lift!

I'm getting off early from work today so I'm applying the new "Rubicon" and "Wrangler Unlimited" Hood decals and removing the "Jeep" emblem on the grill to prep and plastidip. If that ends up not holding up, then Ill end up painting the emblem black (three coats of flat black and three coats of semi-gloss) and be done with it

CombatChuk 09-11-2012 10:33 AM

Wanted to update the build thread!

So I just finished my first Mods, I applied the black "Rubicon" decals and the black "Wrangler Unlimited" decals. They look fantastic. Now after work today I'm going to give it a good wash and take pictures later today.

For the Jeep Emblem on the grill, I tried Plastidip and I didn't like it. So I ended up going back to the dealer and picking up the Wrangler Altitude Edition's Black Jeep Emblem. It was a piece of cake to mount and completes the package nicely.

I ended up ordering a lift last week, but I changed my mind. I went from the Rock Krawler Max Travel 2.5" to the MetalCloak 2.5" Game Changer lite ARB edition kit. I really wanted to be able to get the suspension right and with 8 adjustable control arms and both front and rear adjustable track bars. I should be able to get this Jeep dialed in nicely once it's all said and done. Here's the link to the lift.

The Lift should arrive on Friday. Going to install this with my Dad this Sunday and earlier on Saturday I'll be getting American Racing Mojaves and Duratracs mounted and ready to go on my Jeep. There may be some rubbing, but it should be fine for a day!

Look what the brown Santa brought to my doorstep today!

Kit looks complete so far. The only thing missing were the instructions. So I'm just waiting to hear back from Matson at Metalcloak with some better instructions.

Here's a pic of the Jeep with the black emblem and decals. For comparison before I do the lift and the tires/wheels!

See 'em now, nice!

Sunday my Dad and I busted our ass off and got the lift installed! Tomorrow I'll get into more detail, but here's a quick pic to show how it looks.

I got about 4 inches of lift upfront and 3.5 inches in the back (Way more than expected out of a 2.5" lift)

SCCSD78 09-18-2012 12:10 AM

Looks really nice !

CombatChuk 09-22-2012 03:00 PM

Alright, finally took some more pictures. Here's what we have.

And here's the pictures of the rear axle

Rear trackbar bracket (Way huge, but is secured with u ring around axle and the bracket is also mounted down by the control arm.

Rear control arms and bumpstops (I think I'm going to be putting a smaller bumpstop back there...

So far so good on this lift. Drives pretty nice, I've double checked the torque all around this morning while doing these pictures and everything seems to be holding up well.

The Metalcloak parts are extremely beefy and well built. The quality justifies the price. What doesn't live up to the price is the documentation. Luckily my Dad is awesome with Jeep and we both figured it out. The only instructions related to this lift I was able to find were the following.
  1. Control Arms
  2. Front Bumpstops
  3. Brake line extension installation

That was it when it came to the instructions. Metalcloak is closed on the weekends and we were doing this on a Sunday. Spring and Shocks were straight forward. I ended up using the control arm lengths for the 3.5-4.5" lift in the control arms instructions (none were listed for the 2.5" lift that I ordered) and ripped off the the track bar lengths from the Rock Krawler manuals. Seemed to work out since there was no wobble, but it was good enough to get me to the Jeep shop close to my house to finish the measurements and get it aligned.

Got about 3.75" up front and 3.00" in the rear. Which was insane lol for the 2.5" I was expecting. The longer arms in the rear gave me about the same angle for the rear drive shaft (So that should be fine) and we'll see how long the front one lasts now.

Lookin pretty awesome. :punk:

Thank you! Today I'm finally hoping to finish the lift up, we didn't have time last week to install the rear brake lines so that's going to get done today!

On a scale of 1-10, definitely a 9 (tens are reserved for Geckos, haha).
Looks awesome, distinctive even. :thumb:

lol Thanks man. I love Gecko BTW (In fact all the so called "Skittles" colors). The only issue I have right now is getting the AEV procal working. I set the gearing right and tire diameter, but it's still off.

Nice work, it looks great! :thumb:

Looks purty! Thanks for the info, I am grabbing the same kit. Might send you a message or two if I'm not smart enough to figure it out! I like the wheels BTW.

CombatChuk 09-24-2012 09:06 PM

Sure thing, message me if you have any questions on installing the lift.

To update this thread, I ordered a set of ACE rock rails last week! So the mods keep on coming!

CombatChuk 10-10-2012 07:09 PM

Ace Rock Rails are on! Got an angle grinder and went to town on the body washers and got it going.
