Will this be able to carry the current needed to operate a winch safety or should I go thicker??

i thought you wanted the same gauge as a battery cable. but i'm not 100% on that one....

link to chart could not get it to post Wire Gauge Amps Ratings for 12 volt Automotive Systems

how man amps does your winch call for? depending on the amp rating and the type of wire used you can figure out what size you will need

I think you can get by with #2/0 gauge wire for an 8,000 lb winch.
Not sure what gauge you're holding up. At worst Your winch will bog down under strain of a pull from the loss of amps due to a less than recommended gauge wire. I'd go 4/0 for an 11,000 winch.

actually at worse you will overload the wire making it an element which burns the covering and starts a fire.

This is so corect. I have helped put out 2 fires that were from people winching on small cables for to long. One time the cable was the only thing that got burned. The other time the hood and fender well got the paint burnt on them.
