Bad rumble in my 92 YJ
 
I just put a new set of springs on my 92 YJ (I won't do THAT again) and now it has a REALLY bad rumble in the lower three gears and it lessens in 4th and 5th. If you push the clutch in the rumble goes away. I put it up on jack stands and ran it in gear but couldn't find the source. It sounds and shakes like I'm driving down the road with knobby tires on. The new springs raised the Jeep about 2 1/2" but I don't think that is the problem as the rumble was there before but barely noticeable. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to look? The rumble started after I replaced the clutch a few months ago (won't do THAT again either). I'm wary of driving it too much as something might turn loose before I can get it fixed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Jim

When you put in the clutch did you replace the pilot bearing? Has it been greased before the tranny went in? Also a lift kit is the pinion angle still good. All things to look at.

Yep, I put a whole new NAPA clutch kit, complete with pilot, pressure plate and throwout bearing in and even had the flywheel worked. I don't think the pinion angle is bad. I checked with the spring factory to make sure that the wedge that they put on to correct pinion angle was facing the right way. These were, I thought, direct replacement springs but they turned out to have about 2 1/2" of lift. Not a great deal of lift but a bear to get into place. I changed the springs because the original springs were flat across because of the winch and hard top. It's always something. I'm guessing that I'll end up taking it to the dealer and getting it fixed and getting screwed at the same time. :-)

Take a look here and do some for pinion angle. In fact go to Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts - Tom Woods Custom Drive Shafts Custom Driveshafts Specialist and on the web page look for technical information. It has a few pages on driveshaft ceometry and it will explain everything and answer all the questions. Then you can look at yours again and see if that might be the problem and save you some $$$$.
