'78 CJ-7 Lifetime Project

November 1977 I took delivery of a 1978 Jeep CJ-7 that I ordered from the factory. Lost the window sticker years ago but the sticker price was around $7,100.

It was a Renegade Levi Edition with every option available except for hardtop and auto transmission. I have owned it every since and did a frame off over the last five years.

Here's how she looked in fall 1977.

Yeah, that's me with $#1+ for brains, about 28 years old.

Here she is now.

Not a rad off roader but a road/off road trip champ.

Over the next week I hope to post some more photos of my resto and spec's.

I spend most of my time over at the JK forum. I have two a 2007 and a 2012. I am hoping the Jeep fanatics over here at the CJ forum are more mature than some at the JK forum, just saying.;)

Found an "82 tub to replace the rusted out '78. It will accept the CJ-8 Scrambler bulkhead to.

Even though it is newer it still had to be restored.

Looks nice, I have an 82. Wish I had a garage to do the frame off resto. Great work.

The CJ got paint this time places that were not painted at the factory back in 1977.

I love that jeep. Very nice

Let's talk old school Jeep V8 power. I had 178k miles on the old original AMC 304 c.i. V8. Was going to rebuild it because over 27 or so years it served me well and never let me down.

My friend/co-builder helping me with the project found an AMC 401 c.i. V8 in a Jeep Cherokee Chief that was in decent condition. It doesn't cost any more to rebuild a 401 than it does a 304.

We did a complete rebuild and added:

Edelbrock RV cam and intake
Holley Truck Avenger 670 carb
Flow Kooler water pump
new timing chain and cover
Davis Unified Ignition HEI distributor and plug wires
platinum split fire plugs
four row radiator
dual Optima Red Top batteries
cool looking finned aluminum valve covers

The old stock air cleaner went away later. And the four row radiator was installed after these pics.

Got to love those plug wires. They were $10 each several years ago.

Also forgot to add that I bought the last 401 flywheel 4Wheel Drive Hardware had in stock.

Starting to come together here.

At this point I had a NP 435 a friend gave me but it shifted like an old bread truck so I bought a new on the pallet NV 4500 but did not install it until the job was almost finished.

Took out the D20 transfer case and put in a D300 with an Advance Adapters 4:1 low and Currie twin stick shifters.

Put in a D44 wide axle front end and bought a wide axle AMC rear end cheap and installed Warn one piece axles with locking hubs to be able to flat tow. Stitch welded the axle tube to the housing to help prevent separating under extreme torque.

Later I found out the rear locking hubs would not handle the torque from the 401 so bolted them down. They still look good, right?

What a beautiful Jeep! I think its great that you've owned this Jeep since new in 1977 and still have her today. Great story ;)

On track to be my dream Jeep............

I can't take credit for being the first to put a CJ-8 Scrambler half top on a CJ-7 but there aren't that many. In my personal opinion it is a COOL look!

Keep the pics coming.

tomthbomb 08-31-2012 04:29 PM

The top is bed lined inside and out.

These pics are before I pulled the NP435 and put in the NV4500 (what a tranny!).

The head unit is in the Tuffy console. There are two speakers in Tuffy boxes under the seats and later I installed two speakers in the dash. That's why I ordered it with no glove box or speaker cut outs.

JeeperJake 09-26-2012 08:29 AM

GonzoBobH 09-26-2012 10:36 PM

Impressive. And awesome jeep too.

yellowsnow 09-27-2012 01:10 AM

Fantastic thread here! What a sexy CJ! I wish I had the wheelbase for a 4500...

03_TJ 09-27-2012 09:02 AM

Nice. And I also love the scrambler top. I run a chopped down soft top on my 80, it's the only way to go.

I love that top, where did you find it? I found these: YJ Half Hardtop Kit

But they are not Scrambler tops and interfere with the roll bar.

03_TJ 09-27-2012 09:04 AM

Or did you relocate your roll bar?

Kevin063 09-27-2012 09:09 PM

That.....that is my dream Jeep. I have a 97' but oh how i dream for CJ-7

Smokinjoe 09-27-2012 09:37 PM
