Frameless/Bowless Soft Top

Hey Guys. I have a 99 TJ with the original factory soft top and full doors. The factory soft top has lasted 13 years but is finally starting to fall apart and tear and needs to be replaced.

I know there are several threads on the different brands frameless/bowless soft tops out there and I've read them all. I already know which one I want and I am NOT asking for reviews of the different brands/options, as that has been done to death.

What I am asking is this. Do any of you that went from a FRAMED soft top (factory or aftermarket) to a frameless/bowless soft tops have any regrets?

I have had both, the frameless for a very short time because of a design flaw in the one I received. The only thing I didn't like about the frameless was that the top layer on the roll bar padding, I am thinking after a year or so the coloring on the padding would be rubbed off but I have no proof of this and am probably waaaay more anal than anyone here!

The padding fades anyway from the sun at least mine does...it's so bad i'm about to remove the padding.

For the rampage top is the windshield channel needed if you have a soft top already? I've read on here you need one but on summits site it says you don't. I was soo close to buying one today but didn't know about the windshield channel. Summit has them for $340 with free shipping.

For the rampage you need the windshield channel and te door surrounds. If you can find them used that would be a good deal!

I went with a frame-less from Soft Toppers. I did my research on them and Rampage. Everything I had read on Rampage they had a problem with stitching and the rear shredding after a while in the wind from driving with the windows off. The Soft Toppers has a aluminum bar the goes across the rear that is made into the top. I went from a Hard top to this. I probably wont go back to the hard top. It has been the best thing I have bought for the TJ. I ordered it on a Monday and had it by Friday. It is made from sailcloth material. Comes with the windshield bar, door surrounds, tailgate bar and all the accessories you need to install it. Here is a link to the web site. Jeep Soft Tops Jeep Wrangler Soft Top | Softopper

That Soft Topper looks pretty neat to me! When I replace my framed soft top I think I will try a frameless one like that next time.

The softopper is the one I'm getting but I didn't mention it in the initial post because I didn't want to start a debate over the different frameless tops available since there are so many of those already. I've only had the factory soft top and was just wondering if anyone went frameless and then regretted it for whatever reason, since I can't see any reason not to go frameless....

When I bought my tj it had the rampage top on it. The threads looked a little rough, pulling apart at points. I called them and they sent a new one at no cost, no shipping, nothing, didn't even want the old one back.
Just my two cents

how has the replacement held up? Any company can have quality issues. Backing a product with a good quality replacement would get my vote. I need a new top soon. Mine has spent all it's life outside and I think folded up wet by the prior owner for a good portion of that.

I got the rampage frameless. I have no idea where it leaks but it leaks bad. I have rhe sail cloth. If its not raining i love the top. When it rains my drivers seat it soaked and the floorboards hold water.

My wheeling buddy also got a Soft Topper soft top. When he open it up we noticed at came with clear windows. He had ordered dark tinted ones. He called them the next morning to let them know what had happen. They sent him a set of the Dark tinted ones out that day. He got them via UPS in a few days. When he ask about shipping the clear ones back. They told him to just keep them. Now that is customer service. They fixed the problem quickly.

I check mine before I put it back on every time to see if there are any stitching issues. So far I haven't had any. No zipper problems, no fading, One of the things I like about it vs the Rampage is that the hold down straps are in the inside instead the outside.

I went from factory bestop to a Rampage frameless and it is very nice!

Much quieter than the previous framed top, stays tight, waterproof and hasnt ripped or sheared anywhere. Id suggest it, you just need a drilless header, the surrounds and a tailgate bar for installation.

Sounds like everyone that made the switch is happy they did, glad to hear it....I couldn't think of any downside but then again, since I haven't made the switch I figured there might be something I could not have realized ahead of time. Thanks y'all!
