Softtop in winter

Just curious how does the softtop do in the winter here in maryland? I just got a 2012 jk unlimited and went for the softtop as I liked the fact it is easy to remove now.

well, last winter would NOT be a good example but even with a normal MD winter a soft top is perfectly fine around here. my hardtop has been hanging in the garage since the week after i bought my jeep, so you probably did yourself a favor by not wasting $ on a hard top. And, if you do ever change your mind, you could always pick one up second hand for a decent price.

Used to live in upstate NY and north country NY, and I have used just the soft top. Is it ideal, prob not. But it suited me fine.

But those new JK's seem like they would hold heat with hard or soft better then my'02 TJ and my old 95 YJ.

Almanac is calling for a cold(er) winter this year

i'd rather have a hard top for my TJ during the winter but last year, my soft top held up fine.

if i can find a hard top for cheap this year, i will definitely buy it (lose heat quick in a soft top during the winter)

On our other wrang (99) the softtop withstood the test of time and winters cold chill. However, one must maintain it's appearnce best as possible.. Cleaning it is a must or it could end up gettign musty.. making sure the seals and zippers are all tight and well lubrcated.. (Bar soap) I've even heard of spraying fabric protectant on the soft top to help with hard soaking rains or sitting/standing ice.. just like seam sealing a tent.. once create a solution of elmers glue and water to seal the inside of the soft top. Thou I've never tied any sort of spray.. I think if your leaving your soft top out in the cold (not while driving) it might be best to get a cover just for the soft top area.. Thou a tarp can work if attached properly.. there are custom soft top covers that woudl work better.

I have a soft top on my 89 and it leaks when its heavy rain any ideas

blueskiesbill 09-14-2012 09:54 PM

Is the leak coming from where the font hardware attaches to the windshield? If so look in that location, maybe you torqued the screws in too much, or maybe there is a crack....

It leaks right over top the driver seat where the threads are

What could I do pr use to stop this

The tops hold up just fine. I have had multiple jeeps, most I still own, and I have never had any problems in the winter. If I know its going to snow alot of the time I will throw a cover or tarp over the jeep. It makes snow removal a little easier.

Good to know thanks but is there some kind of seal spray out there for tiny leaks where its threaded together up top
