Dual Battery setup
 
I have a 94' YJ and i want to do a dual battery setup. anyone have anything that works? not sure what kit to go with...

I never used a kit..just wired them parallel

Wih the availability of 200+ amp alternators, what on Earth are you needing that much current for, if you dont mind my asking?

i run alot of electronics and i just want to make sure i have enough power. ive heard there is alot of arguements about the best power setup so i figured id put something up and see if anyone could help me out. electronics are not my strng point by any means...

Well I am certainly no expert, but I know a little ;)

Typically a 2 battery setup will add capacity to your system, but not provide "more" power, just power for a longer period.

A two alternator setup does the opposite, adds current but not capacity.

A two alternator system is what you would want if you have constant, engine running, power draw - like in a limo.
A two battery setup is what you would want if you have sudden temporary but high current draws, giving the batteries time to recharge in between.

Bottom line? If you are running on battery power with the engine on, you need a bigger alternator.

Instead of fabbing in a 2nd, I would look at fabbing in a leese neville or other high output alternator, you will not use all the power they can generate, and add a 2nd battery to that (if needed).

you just need a deep cycle battery and do "the big three". upgrade the battery ground cables with 0/1 gauge cable and upgrade the battery to alt cable to a 0/1 gauge. this is what i did when i added a winch and also running a 2500rms watt sound system. the stereo system had a lot of draw off the battery but with the upgrade to the wires there was no dimming of the lights when the bass hits, also helped when winching, there was no draining of the battery.

I imagine that would cover whatever you wanted to run, it takes a BIG draw to need more than 1 alt.

Put another way, I used to run a tool truck. It had lights all over the outside per DOT specs, fullsize flourecent lighting in both upper corners the full length of the ceiling (18'), 2 lights per shelf by 8 shelves, a 3000W converter that ran a laser printer, laptop computer, and other 120v loads, usually a battery charger, a 12v fan, a power liftgate, and probably a couple other things. It had 2 12V auto (in parrallel) starting batteries, 2 6 volt deep cycle marine (in series) batteries for the lights, 1 12v deep cycle marine battery for the converter, an inverter, an isoltaor, and ONE alternator.

the only time i have seen a duel alt setup was a professional car audio competition, one was used normal and the second was for the battery powering the amps. its not the conventional duel battery setup, its just adding an extra electrical system that has nothing to do with the rest of the vehicle.
