no spare on back?

anyone have any pictures of their tj without a spare on the back i was thinking of making a rack inside for the spare.

TJspeed 09-02-2012 01:15 PM

Just take off the spare. Takes 2 min. The bolts on the rack are 1/2"

Or.... http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&c...re&spell=1#p=1

kpla51 09-02-2012 01:24 PM

its already off i was just curious what people did to cover the holes and such and does anyone know what size torn bit is in the rubber stops on the back

JDT 09-02-2012 01:26 PM

I just took mine off yesterday, the rubber stops take a T-30 torx bit.

kpla51 09-02-2012 01:29 PM

kinda blows that the paint is a little messed up where the mount was

BLK00TJ 09-02-2012 03:23 PM

From when I used to run spareless. I put the original bolts back in to fill the holes. You can get bolts from the hardware store to fill the tire-bumper holes.

I went out to Lowes or Homedepot and got plastic plugs. They're in the hardware section.

I used a clay bar to get the majority of that off my tailgate. After 3 treatments you hardly notice it.

x2. I just put the original bolts back in.
There's also a rubber plug on the inside of the tailgate that fits in the hole for the 3rd brake light wires.

kpla51 09-03-2012 11:13 AM

so would those plugs from home depot be 1/2 inch?

1jeeplvr 09-03-2012 11:59 AM

You guys are brave.Im too chicken to run w/o a spare. Most of my wheeling is done 1.5 to 2.0 hrs from home.I guess since I have onboard air & a plug kit a major blowout would be the worst, which is what would happen to me.

Here's pic of the plugs I used. The big one is for the tub where the rear seatbelts bolted

here ya go!

TJs99TJ 09-03-2012 06:00 PM

oh, i forgot to mention, x3, i just put the original bolts back in the holes and the rubber plug from the tailgate back where the 3rd brake light wire ran through the tailgate....i keep a tire plug kit and compressor with me everywhere i go and have free towing through my insurance in the event of a total blow out...didn't like the look of the 29" spare on the back and can't use that with 33's anyway....just didn't want to spend $380 on a matching 5th wheel and tire what would just end up dry rotting on me....

Or too Smart. :)
Lots of very cool ideas and sharp looks presented here...... and for around town it's OK?
If traveling to get on trails or going far off road, I think your living too close to the edge!

269jeep 09-04-2012 03:55 PM

Anyone ever get un-wanted attention form law enforcement for not having the center high mounted brake light? Just curious.

IndyJeepMan 09-04-2012 03:57 PM

Kpla51- its a custom box I had made it locked carried the spare and had a 10" woofer for my rock n roll! :rockroll:

and ive never had any problems from police, the LED's I had were very bright.

269jeep 09-04-2012 04:01 PM

What did you do with the wiring for the light?
