Gear Swap Help
 
Hey guys I want to do a gear swap in my Jeep from the stock 307 to a 411. Does someone sell a kit that would include all the parts to do it? I just called the Jeep parts dept down the street from the dealership where I work and those guys don't have a clue (Great help). Give me some help. It's an 05 v 6spd 4.0 w/ dana 35 in the rear

Are you planning on installing the ring & pinion gears on your own and if you are, do you know what you're doing? And besides, 4.56 is a better all-around ratio for 33" tires, at least in my strongest possible opinion. :)

Just be sure that you won't find yourself wanting 4.56's in a few months. Gearing is expensive and should only be done once if at all possible.

for 4.10 gears.. itd be cheaper just to buy some axles out of a 4banger..

i ordered front gears alone.. and my cost was 346.. that was the CHEAPEST place i found..

take into consideration gears, the install kits for each axle, and a new carrier..

the cheapest places i found was absoluteoffroadphx.com and rustysoffroad.com

joe at a.o. has more gears than whats listed on his page

I would get 4.56 gears I would have gone with 4.88's if I had the 4 speed auto or a 5 speed standard but that is for 35's
the 4.56 will be perfect with 33's
you will need a new carrier for the front and rear
and the master install kit

i agree about a 4 banger rear end if you want 4.11. also keep in mind setting up new gears takes multiple special tools that aren't ordinary to a diy. dial indicators, and shop press for starters. some people have luck setting them up by feel, and i also redo a lot of rear ends people set up by feel. there's precise measurements to the thousandth of an inch, and specs of 15-25 inch lbs, not ft. lbs.

we've had a heated discussion before, but to have a qualified shop do this it is easily over a grand in no time.

there are complete kits to do it, gear set, and master install set, master set usually doesn't come with outter axle bearings and seals, might as well do those at the same time.

I'll have a shop do all the work. I'm just wondering what kind of parts cost i'll be looking at. I planned on buying my own parts and giving them to the shop to install. The Jeep service dept said around $800 labor, which i figured. So should I just have the shop get all the parts? I'm thinkin 411 gears because I probably won't ever go any bigger with tires or lift than 33's and 4in lift and don't do any hard wheeling. Also 411 sounds good to me because i'd get a lower gear for wheeling but doesn't seem too low for hwy driving since I'll have 6th gear for the hwy, and conserve a littlt mpg.

Well to tell you the truth I would let the shop installing it get the parts cause if something goes wrong down the road they will blame it on the parts you supplied to them.Also if you do a search on gear ratio you will find with 33s and 4.56 gears it will be just a hair lower than stock gears with stock tires.If you are going to pay that kind of money I would go with 4.56 and 99.9% of the people on here will tell you the same.You said you would probably never go any bigger than 33s but there is a probably in there and also with 35s or bigger a 4.88 ratio would be better.You also said 4" lift and 33s well that is my setup right now and I am allready thinking of going to 35s after I regear.Anyway Hope this help sway you toward the 4.56 because you will not be happy with the 4.10s and it is to expensive to regear again.

Don't provide the parts to the shop installing them, as slf41002 said. If you do and something goes wrong either during or after the install, the installer will blame the parts you provided, and the dealer of the parts will blame the installer. And stuff DOES go wrong with R&P installations... it's just not worth the potential minor savings, especially since the installing dealer will likely discount the parts if you ask him to and show him pricing you've found on the net. Afterall, his real profit is with the labor, not the parts.

And just one more gentle push towards 4.56 for those 33" tires, not 4.10. :)

right on, shop the parts, and show them what you find. shops do rely on parts for their profit. we have to mark them up over 50%, and usually closer to 100% mark up. but if you provide the parts, they won't warranty them. and just like jerry said, it is possible to have problems with them.

I have an 05 4.0 with 35s and a 6MT and agree with you on the 4.10/4.11s vs 4.56. I currently have 3.73 and it works great for me. I had 33s before the 35s and thought it was a little low (gears too high numerically) for my use. First gear was too low to use, and we normally drove 2-4-6 rather than using all gears. Now I love it. For me, 4.56 with 35s may be OK, but I would have absolutely hated 4.56 on 33s. I even improved my mpg going from 33s to 35s. I only went with 33s at first thinking any more and I would have had to regear. It was a safe play, since the axles really aren't strong enough for 35s and abuse. I am allot easier on her now, especially off road.

Maybe this has to do with differences between the 5MT and 6M.?

I'm doing mine myself because I have a really good idea of how to do it, Have most the tools needed,am willing to learn and will take my time to do it right. If you have no idea what stuff is like pinion depth,preload or back lash are then I wouldn't do it yourself. I would do 4.56 for33's

i recently changed my gears also. i went from 3.55 with 31's to 4.11 with 33's. so far i am happy with the swap. haven't got to do any wheeling yet though. waiting on the sye to get here. but on the highway there is a good noticeable difference.
