Which Soft Top?!?! Just bought a 97'
I am trying to hunt down a good soft top for my 97' that I just bought. I drove a lot of jeeps while I was looking for the one I got. Some of them the tops made no noise and others the tops made all kinds of noise.

Are there any tops out there that are better than others when it comes to noise and quality? Which one should I search for?

Oh ya and I will be posting some pics of my new jeep as soon as it stops raining here.

the OEM factory tops are the best. thickest material (sailcloth) helps them to last the longest, and keeps them quiet. Look for used factory tops on ebay or craigslist. there are slight differences between the different model year soft tops - I believe 01-02 jeeps used the thickest (3-ply sailcloth)

Ok so I should shoot for a 2001 or 2002 OEM soft top? That fits a 97 right?

Thanks for the help I'm going searching now. Is there anywhere besides eBay I should go to find one?

Yes that would be a good option. But did you see the price....ouch. As long as you're not in too much of a hurry, take some time to check the listings on craigslist and ebay (and the forums). Lightly used factory tops show up all the time.

97-00 use denim - not bad, but not the best. 01-02 use 4-ply sailcloth, and 03-06 use 3-ply sailcloth. 4-ply will last the longest and stay the quietest - although since the material is stiffer, it doesnt stretch as easily - so it would be a little harder to install it when the temperature is cold.

One possible example of a decent used top:

Not sure if the color is right for your jeep - but this could be a good option if you want something that's pretty decent, and if you're not wanting to spend too much money.

When I was searching for tops, i had come across a few people that were cleaning out their garage/storage, and dug up their original factory soft top that had never been used. A lot of jeeps came with both the hard top and soft top, and some people just stuck with the hard top....never used the soft top, just kept it stored in the garage, basement, etc

Just bought a '97 TJ sport. Looking for soft top. Which aftermarket soft top do you all recommend ?

jp2611 12-23-2012 04:14 PM

Which one do you recommend is a wide open question......There are as many different tops as there are Jeeps.....and the pricing is all over the place.

This might help Bestop made the OEM tops for TJs...which means they PROBABLY have the Best handle on how to make the tops fit well.

Some Halftops dusters and jammers which are not "regular tops", are made by a lot of different manufactures. Same goes for the conventional tops that have frames.

And there are frameless tops as well.

Now that I have done nothing but throw a bunch of info here are what you need to ask yourself.

What do I want my top to do?

How much can I spend?

How long do I expect it to last?

Will I drive the Jeep every day does it get garaged?

IMO until you answer those questions than search for a top and pick a couple out....we are not going to be doing anything but telling you what WE like.

Check Quadratec for shopping purposes. Their website is easy to use and can see a lot of tops....once you have it narrowed down than start shopping asking....

Good Luck!!
