Mud, Sand, DD... Tires?
 
OK I am going to be getting some 33's and need a good tire for all Mud Sand and DD. But mostly it is my DD, so something quiet.

Also I would like a slightly aggressive tread, but don't want full blown swamppers. lol

I am looking and Micky MTZ and BFG All Terrains. Which would be better?

Also, can anyone tell me if the MTZ's are double sided so I can have a black sidewall showing? Their site says OWL, but I swear i have seen them mounted with black showing.

Black Jeep = Black Tires & Rims in my humble eyes.

MTZ by far, and yes they have black sidewall.

Mine is a DD and weekend off-roader every weekend. I am impressed with the quiet road manners and off-road abilities of my Duratracs. I almost got BFG A/T's.... glad I didn't. Saved a BUT LOAD of money, too.

I just got back from the 4 days on The Rubicon a few weeks ago and they performed awesome at 10-12 lbs and never gave a second thought about them. Lots of grips for rocks, did great in the mud and the workin the powder was just as impressive.

You are comparing an MT to an AT. The proper comparison would be the mtz to the km2. In that case, and in my opinion, the km2 prevails. I have run both and the mtz wore like poop! Even with rotating and balancing them like your supposed to. They went bald twice as fast. Just food for thought.

I DD on MTZs. Not too loud, but my old KMs were a bit quieter. Neither is annoyingly loud.

My Duratrac's have been awesome. They've gotten me through some thick nasty mud down here in Georgia and ride surprisingly quiet and smooth on the road.

Ok that is 2 for Duratrac, 2 for MTZ and 1 for Copper.

And none for BFG. Point noted. lol

The fun part is I priced the Duratracs and MTZ, roughly the same price for my needs. ooohhhh the decisions we must make!

The Duratracs have better on-road manners and MTZs have better off-road, so it's what you want out of the tires

Interco Trxus MT. I can't say enough about them. Simply awesome tires.

MT's suck on sand! Get a solid AT like BFG or General Grabber AT2's. The generals are a little softer than the BFG's but the tread pattern is very similar

Love my MTZs but yes they do seem to wear very quickly

I just got the General Grabber AT2's, and they are much quieter than Mud Dawg MT's (PO installed).

They look good and ride smooth, i will report back after my first JeepFest this weekend on how they do on the trails and obstacle course.

Great... just when I get it narrowed down to 2ish. General and Interco get thrown in the mix. I definitely like their lower price though. That will help as I am getting rims at the same time. I

And the wear issue on the MTZs now worries me (3 posts now). With it being my DD and not too excited about having to buy new tires more frequently. That leaves no money for other stuff =)

UPDATE: This last weekend I participated in the Pickens Sheriff JeepFest Crawl for the Kids, and the General Grabber AT2's and my Jeep suprised me.

Out on the trails and obstacle course I never had any issues with traction in 4 wheel high or low, I did dump the clutch on the trail to get up a steep hill climb and with minimal slip from the tires, they impressed me for being an AT tire.

This is my 2 cents and my experience, I will post picks of the aftermath of mud and dirt on the Jeep.

Saw your jeep over there, really like the rims. You should have tried that hill climb, it was easy first thing saturday but around 4pm saturday it was a nightmare, had a new jku get winched up and I blew another shock and bent my exhaust off the hanger trying to get up.

The Bfg at ride really nice on the road and they never die! Super quite and do fairly well in mub and grip really well on sand. My jeep club there are more km2 km1 and Bfg at than anything else.

I thought about the Hill Climb, but after watching the Jeep Parts of Atalanta JK being stuck in the Chuck Norris Mud hole I thought twice about it, plus I was still awaiting to go on the trails.

I thought you were talking bout the hill climb on trail 2, but ya I knew a couple of guys that got stuck in the tank trap then broke their spider gears in their d35 on the telephone pole climb:banghead: 4hrs after dark trying to fix it, missed the night ride

I did the "easier" trail ride, and those hills were challenging enough for me, saw a few people get hung up. I am reasonably new to Jeep ownership and it was a day to enjoy a good trail with the girl. There are a few more mods I need before venturing into the dark :whistling:

But to get back to the OP, I saw quite a few BFG's AT & MT, those people never really had issues that I could see.

Dont get Firestone Destination A/T's their awful 20k and 20-30% none are wearing right and They went egg shaped

I've heard alot of good things about duratracs and mt/r kevlar along with km2 and t/a ko

I'm going with 33/12.50r15 mt/r kevlar when I get the cash

I am definitely going with 33/12.50r15 for the tires on 10" rims.

And honestly, I am really now leaning towards the General Grabber AT2s or the Duratracs. The Generals have the look I wanted, great reviews so far (here and elsewhere) on grip and longevity. Plus can't beat the price either. From what I have seen around the web.

I run BFG AT.

Negatives
-Terrible in mud
-Not great in loose sandy stuff. If you deflate them far and run in dunes you have a big chance of debeading.

Positives
-They wear extremely well
-Great for a DD
-They are very tough with a very tough sidewall
-I find them extremely good on rocks and rocky terrain

If you want a good all around tire I'd go with the duratracs! Stay away from BFg all terrains and the general grabber at2s if you want tires that will do good in mud and sand. I originally got the BFg all terrains because they didnt have the duratracs at the Dunn tire here. Had them for 2 weeks and got stuck in my gf muddy driveway! The mud was only a half an inch deep and had the consistency of peanut butter I was extremely upset and disappointed with them. Her drive way goes down hill to the back of her house and loops back uphill on the other side to get back to the street and I seriously couldn't get back up the other side with the bfgs. Now the general grabber at2s and the bfgs have great tred life the at2s in a 32inch tire have the 60,000 mile tred life guarantee but once you go to 33 it is no longer in effect and I think the bfgs have a 40 or 50,000 mile one up to 32 inch tire could be wrong. The at2s are good on the street and in the rain and average in the snow but no good in mud (my dad has them on his Durango) they are not terrible but I would still go with the duratracs. I can almost say that the at2s and bfgs are about the same in mud snow rain and street but duratracs are excellent in snow rain street mud. Idk about sand lol hope this helps :wavey:

EDIT: forgot to say that I returned the bfgs after the incident with my girlfriends driveway and got the duratracs. It's a good thing Dunn tire has a 30 day return period because I was not happy being stuck in a driveway lol. :thumb:

I did :D, there were a quite a few 8 to 10in deep mud holes that I drove through with lots of GA Red Clay that is super slick. I tried in one stretch of mud to lose traction but the tires grabbed :rofl: and I got right through with no issues. So far I like them and they did well for an AT. I also added a photo of the trail ride, and one I found of the obstacle course, not my Jeep on course but you get the idea of the terrain I put the tires and Jeep through.
