2012 Tailgate hinge problem
I have a 2012 Sahara unlimited with 7000 or so miles driven daily around town for work, it has not been off road yet and it has been driven easy so far.
The problem is with the tailgate hinge set up, I was told it is new for 2012 from Chrysler and when the tailgate and spare are opened on an uneven surface or a hill even a small incline the tailgate and tire are to heavy for the plastic arm on the stop mechanism to hold and it can pop free from its mount causing stress on the rear hinges and they can stretch out of position. My dealership has sent pictures of this to Chrysler who denied the problem saying there must have been an outside influence in the cause of this problem.
My dealership is paying for the repair out of there own pocket! they are a great dealership by the way, when my hinge broke I was in my driveway and opened the gate myself holding it until it stopped then let go and it just pulled the stop right out of its connection there was no undue stress just the weight of the tailgate and tire!
so in closing keep an eye on your tailgate hinges and watch for a recall someday as I"m sure this is a weak point.

I had the same thing happen with my 2012 call of duty edition. Was on the curb of a street with a slight tilt. Opened the gate and the damn thing just popped around and overextended the hinges, broke the arm as well as bent the gate itself.
The guys at the body shop are scratching their heads as to why there are only two small rollers holding the arm in place with no real effective "stopping mechanism" on the inside of it.
They are submitting it to jeep now to see if they will cover it.
My dealer hadn't seen this before, but new something was up when they went to order the hinges and they're on back order.
Rear Door Hinge
It is good to know that I am not the only one with the door hinge problems. I have had it fixed by the dealer twice and they said next time it happened I would have to pay out of pocket. I told them I was a mechanical engineer and have an understanding of strengths of materials and mechanical designs. I said he rear door hing is not adequate for the weight of the rear door and tire.
Overall, thusfar, I like my Rubicon. However, the rear hinge has been a problem. As a result of repairing the door hing, the plastic lining in the back rattles when I play music with bass. Also, I have had to replace two tail light assemblies that were broke for the real door opening too far.
Finally, and unrelated, the GPS is horrible. I expected more from a brand new vehicle days.
Does anybody have a solution?
