rear axle upgrade

Ok so I bought a 4banger with a shitty Dana 35 in the rear and would really like to upgrade it for higher speed on the hyway and not loose power when I'm not on hardball. I was hoping someone could give me some advice I've been mulling over putting a Dana 44 in the rear but would know what to put up front and yes I want my 4x4. I have also heard of just re-gearing the front and rear both. The only reason I am considering this would be so i dont have to actually remove the axel just work inside the pumpkin as much as possible. Again if someone could give me a pro and con of both solutions thank you.

I'd leave the 30 up front it's a good axle. If you want to beef it up throw some aftermarket shafts in it.

As for the rear you should look more into the 8.8.

I wouldn't drop a dime into a D35. Garbage, even with not much bigger than stock tires. As soon as you add taller gears, you're putting more stress on internal parts that are already weak. If I were you (and I just did this myself), I'd go with a Ford 8.8 and regear it to 4.88 so you have your 5th gear back.

This! I just put Chromoly shafts in my D30 and my Ford 8.8 when I did the re-gears.

X2 (or 3) go with an 8.8... Cheaper and stronger than a Dana 44.
