Towing with my I6 tj. What lenght trailer should i use?
 
I need to pick up 3 snowmobiles from my father inlaws and trailer them to my house 180 miles. My question is what kind of trailer would work best. 2 wheels or one with 4. What length? 2 of them are small bravos the other is larger. What is best weight distribution?

The towing capacity is only 1 ton, total, trailer and load, and not much more than 200 lbs of tongue weight.. I've never had more than 150 on the tongue, and hauled a ton of wood pellets only once, about 10 miles.. since then I split the load in half.. I can pull 1 ton no problem, but you better have trailer brakes.. Wheel base? I'm not sure what you're asking, but the longer the tongue is the better..

I'm calling wheel base distance back from tongue. Not sure if a trailer with 4 wheels is more stable?

I have a 6x10 single axle full side. Loaded with all my hunting gear im at 2300lbs. I wouldnt go above that weight with trailer and sleds combined. It gets really sloppy steering in the front end and the back can get fishy. Also going too heavy pushes against the vehicle and CAN cause loss of control. No bueno. Stay small and light. If your buying new from a trailer co. then they should point you in the right direction. I did some brief research in michigan and couldnt find any 3 up open topped trailers. Your search may turn up better results.
overall, lighter is better. I wouldnt go past 12' personally. But your options may be limited with 3 sleds. bravos are generally small, you might get away with a flat bed style trailer with some sled organizing. But of course you gotta have room for gear.
Single axles are easier to back up with our short jeep wheelbase. Double axle just adds more weight you cant use on a jeep anyway but turns slower when backing up. Single axle short trailers tend to react VERY quick to the slightest turn in reverse.
Distribution is important with jeeps. put the heaviest one over the trailer axle if possible even if its towards the back end. But i think its only a 40lb difference from the smaller bravo to the bigger one so it shouldnt be to detrimental to balance those out. Hope this helps!

Yes it does thank you. I'm not buying a trailer. I just need to get the sleds to my house once.

Under 1000 lbs, cool no problem, as the above stated, lighter the trailer the better.. Use a bathroom scale to check your tongue weight.. 175 to 200 lbs.. Your rear bumper should drop no more than an inch after hooked up.. Good luck and stay safe..

When you tow, take it slow and easy. Make sure the trailer is loaded correctly, with more weight towards the tounge then behind the wheels.

The TJ's problem is not weight capacity for towing, it's lack of wheel base to keep the trailer under control.

I just passed a couple of folks taking it slow and easy,, one of them had way too much tongue weight, the headlights were pointed at the sky and they were wandering all over the interstate, the other had too little tongue weight, and the trailer was wiggling violently.. Each was a danger to all others on the road , as well as themselves.. Load your trailer as I stated above, put 38lbs of air in your rears, 38lbs in the trailer tires, and you'll be amazed at how nicely your jeep smooths out. No need to drive slow, just drive smooth and look way way ahead... Driving slower than the normal flow of traffic is an accident waiting to happen..

Smooth is what I meant, not necessarily slower than surrounding traffic. If the trailer is loaded wrong, it'll tell him.

Mmmk,,, cool,,, I drag my loaded trailer cross country every year,, 65 to 72 mph the whole way ;))

Thanks for the advice. I have to bring trailer their first unloaded, should I put some sand bags to add tongue weight?

Can't hurt,, just in front of the axle,, it'll help keep the trailer from dancing on bumpy roads. ;) also, with an empty trailer reduce its tire pressure to around 25 lbs, otherwise it's going to dance with every bump, once loaded, air up to 38 or so.. I run about 24 lbs with 300 lbs of camping gear, including firewood and water and gas.. When I'm hauling heavy stuff 38 works great.. ;))

It's just one trip...no need to get crazy with tire pressures nd what not. Keep it level when it's loaded and ur fine.

I've had some pretty horrible experiences with towing in my tj.

don't ever haul 16' boards in a trailer behind you

Don't roll across the scale at the dump at 7000lbs, very hard to control say any speed

Don't hit the interstate with a trailer loaded with windows, standing up at an angle, on a windy day

Funny to talk about now but at the time I thought I was gonna die

My Dad had a nasty experience with a travel trailer when I was young. Driving in West Texas through some canyon passes, he could see where there was a wicked cross-wind, enough to move the big trucks around. When he got there the wind was strong enough that it sheared the ball off of the hitch and the trailer disintegrated. It's a wonder the propane tanks didn't explode.
