YJ speaker boxes

I just purchased a 1992 Renegade, which has a fairly good Pioneer head unit, but only the original dash speakers. I'd like to add some quality 6x9s, and wonder if anyone has experience with the Vertically Driven Sound Wedges? Can a powerful 6x9 play well in that small a box, or do I have to go to the much larger 22" boxes that sit on the wheel wells for good sound? The 6x9s I would get will be either the JBL963 or JL Audio C2-690tx. Thanks for your help!!

I had my dash speakers replaced with Kenwood 4x6 and my sound bar with kenwood 4" round, they sound great, later on I found 2 6x9 speaker wedges on CL for $20 I believe I installed myself and them a little while later when I had the extra cash, I took it back to the audio shop and he installed 6x9 in the boxes and added a 350 watt amp pushing them all All can say is WOW!!!! The 6x9 are 4way and added all the bass "I " need. Total cost over a 4-6 month period around $900 installed. I could of saved about $150 by doing it myself but I just don't have the time. When that top goes to flapping the volume goes up LOL. Hope this helps.

I have the sound wedge's, they are phenomenal. They look like they should have been installed there from the factory. I have Polk Audio 4x6 plate speakers in the front, Polk 6x9's in the VDP boxes and powered by a Polk 4 channel amp. I can drive down the highway at 85 MPH and with the system turn up and completly drowned out all wind and highway noise, and the music be perfectly clear. Best system I have ever built.

The sound wedges are good, the speakers that come with them arent very loud but I dont know anything about amps; i just wired them straight to my radio. The sound quality is much improved and much more "full" sounding than just coming straight at you from the dash.

sound upgrade

Well, after a few tantrums (Mine) I finally got speakers installed in my 92 Renegade. The front is 2 Focal 4" in the VDC Skypods, and the rear has 2 JBL 6x9s in the VDC Sound Wedges. What a nightmare! One of the sound wedges had to be filed extensively to fit the JBLs, the SkyPod needed MAJOR adjustments to fit the Focal 4"s, and the Focal speakers came with WORTHLESS installation instructions. But driven by an old Pioneer DEH-1400, it all sounds "reasonable", and no need to bother with the dash mounted 4x6s.

The Focal 4" have EXCELLENT highs (I forgot to install the "bass blockers", so they do have to come down again). The JBLs are harder to evaluate, as I need to get the bass blockers in to protect the Focals, to balance the system. Also, the Sound Wedges are not well placed for sound. Perhaps a new Kenwood head and independent amp in the future...

Was does everyone else have for sound in YJs?

A pair of amp'd up 6x9 speakers can put out a LOT of sound. I've been wanting to do it with my 6x9's.

I would wet myself if that thing was running after me.

i have a 92 yj, i went with 2 6x9 infinty speakers bolted on my wheel wells with the stock speakers in the front dash. The 6x9's produce a ton of sound and are very clear. however whenever my sub hits(10in kicker comp) my stock speakers rattle. thinking of buying the kicker factory replacement speakers or??? need some advice. thanks!

I already had the speakers, and they are loud enough. sony 6x9's and I got some sony 4x6's at walmart for a matched set. got a set of 5's in another box I aint usin yet. dont wanna install and amp.

amps are not hard, not really, you can make 'em hard, but all you really need is ventilation, + & -, and speakers. unless your doin what "tomjeep" did, then there's a little more to it.
