Just installed Kicker speakers

Just finished with the Kicker speaker upgrade on my 2013 Sport S. Took about an hour and fifteen minutes for all 4 speakers. I have the base 130res unit with no sub. I was looking for a little more bass and volume. The Kicker 77kick10 met my expectations! I highly recommend this upgrade.

For those of us who aren't in the know, or new, can you explain what you did and the parts that you needed? Or maybe which DIY threads you looked over?

Wow!!! What a difference without breaking the bank. If you want truer crisper sound with more volume and bass, this upgrade is a must!!!

I'm trying to figure out if these would be an improvement over the 2013 Alpines as well... Has anyone tried replacing the Alpines yet?

Nice writeup, thanks!

I just pulled the trigger, should have 2 sets of these Friday. Did you end up upgrading the sub? Do you know if there is an amp / upgrades for that?

Landonk 10-17-2012 07:37 PM

No sub or amp as of yet.

I know that factory speakers, especially those that are not part of a premium system are often cheap and sound like crap.

But how does the Kicker allow more bass and volume without an added amp? If you are still using the 130 HU, aren't you still delivering the same amount of power to the speakers?

Gosh... To be honest... I am not an audiologist. It just sounds louder, crisper with a little more thump.

+1

I replaced all 4 speakers and the difference is very clear. It is well worth doing the upgrade. I had the "alpine premium system" in my 12 JKUR and the speakers say infinity. Even without getting a beefier amp the highs are much clearer and the bass is less muddy, though still isn't all that great.

I would assume the difference is in the impedance of the speaker and/or the speaker's sensitivity. A lower impedance will draw more power from the same amp, though every amp has a limit. The sensitivity of the speaker will make it louder with less power, so there may not be any more power flowing, but a high sensitivity speaker will be louder.

The reason you aren't getting any more clarity is because of the signal source - your headunit. The factory unit puts out a "dirty" signal, especially at higher volume levels. The muddy sound you hear when you turn it up is distortion, and it can kill your speakers if you let it get too high for too long. Upgrade the headunit and you'll "unlock" the clarity the speakers are capable of.

On a side note, are the speakers that come in the Kicker upgrade still a paper cone, or are they more like the aftermarket speakers?

The way it works is that although the same amount of power is being sent to the speakers, the speaker can better handle the information being sent to it. For example its like comparing a TV that can output at 420p compared to 1080p. They're getting fed the same picture except one TV can read and output the picture better as the 420p tv is not capable of.

I just installed the kicker speakers and they are a vast improvement over the stock speakers. I bought mine from Steve White motors as well and was very pleased with the service and info they gave me for installing them. Took about an hour to install all 4.
