Aftermarket fuel pump opinions?
I've got to drop my tank on my '91 YJ 4.0L to replace the external feed and return hoses that are cracked and leaking and want to replace the fuel pump at the same time (so I don't have to drop the tank again for awhile.) Its an aftermarket Aero steel tank that uses the stock fuel pump on its own pump/sender assembly.
Anyway, there are a bunch of fuel pump options available so I'm looking for some feedback on what others have used, recommend, or have had issues with.
There are Denso, Delphi, Bosch, Carter, Performance Electric, Autobest and other brands out there ranging from $28-$130. I'm looking for quality and long life mainly, but wouldn't mind saving a couple of bucks too.
I'd like to get one ordered by tomorrow so any thoughts would be great. Thanks!
From what I can gleen so far searching the web...
Delphi (which is also AC/Delco) seems to be a solid choice
Bosch also solid, however, some negative feedback around fitament
Airtex has LOTS of negative feedback and I'm staying away from those
Walbro appears to be a solid brand also used in performance applications, however, no info on longevity
Carter seems to use different branded pumps in their kits and doesn't appear to actually produce pumps - RockAuto has one Carter kit with a Bosch pump and another with Walbro
Nothing on Denso
Not a popular topic I guess. I would have liked to get a list going or something with best and worst aftermarket fuel pumps for Jeep YJs. Oh well, a guy can dream.
So I went with the Carter P74057 w/ Walbro pump from Rock Auto. We'll see how it goes.
My original pump is still going strong after 21 years (sitting the past two), only 3 fuel filter changes, and a swap to an Aero tank so hopefully I can get even half that longevity. Time will tell...
