blown differential

Luckily the rear differential blew today on my 98 tj sahara. what would you guys recommend for the best way to spend my money to get it fixed?

wheelin352 06-01-2008 08:23 PM

do you have a dana 44 or 35 and do you no what exactly blew the spiders the ring and pinion

JeepCommandoja 06-01-2008 09:43 PM

well i took the rear diffy cover off and everything looked ok. so now i believe that the problem is actually the left axle. any of you guys had that issue?

spanky 06-01-2008 10:23 PM

luckily ??

richp 06-02-2008 06:16 AM

More info, D35, D44, tire sizes, etc.

1BLKJP 06-02-2008 06:04 PM

Well if you think it's an axle and your tire has pulled completely of our housing then i would assume you have a D44. :D

If that's the case then a set of Alloys will work well for you. :D

I have 31 in rubber and I can't what I have as far as d44 or d30 if I take a pic could u guys identify?

distortedtj 06-03-2008 04:45 AM

yes

JeepCommandoja 06-11-2008 12:32 AM

ok so i got the diagnosis back from my mechanic and im gonna need a new rear differential the mopar parts are like $2k so what i have now is a dana 35 in the back with 3.07 gears and a dana 30 in the front. i wanna put a locker in the back and change the gears to 3.73 so i can roll 33s better.

whatcya think about that?

SurfnSnow 06-11-2008 01:00 AM

You've already broken a d35, why waste money on another one? You could get a well built d44 or a Ford 8.8 for either the same amount (or even cheaper with the 8.8) and 3:73's suck with 33's. You'd be happy with 4:10s or better yet 4:56s with 33's.
You'd be really surprised on the amount of abuse a d30 can take. I've got a d30, 4:56 gears, with an ARB locker, running 33's and that's held up really well

branty 06-11-2008 09:20 AM

Exactly what did the mechanic say needs to be replaced? I agree with these guys, go ahead and upgrade while you are spending the $. However, if you are wanting to stick with what you have, I have those parts in my garage. I would unload them to you for cheap, if you were interested. Where do you live?

After regearing and going with a super 35 kit, I have leftover;

D35 rear axles
3.07 gears
limited slip carrier

Just let me know if this would help you out.

whitebuffalo 06-11-2008 10:10 AM

i might still have a set of spiders laying around if you need em....

ok the exact same thing happen to me in September 35's and a D 35 with 3.07's its a bad combo all you probably need is spider gears and that all MAYBE a axel but idk it cost me like 175.00 or like 200 with the syn fluid and a solid axel cover it not hard

here is the pic of the spider gear

Well, while I agree with you in that REgearing from 3.07s to 3.73s would be a waste of time, I have to disagree with you in saying that running 33s with 3.73s suck. I'm running that combo right now. I have the 4.0L with the 4-speed auto. Absolutely no problem running the speed limit (and over) and with the ultra-low first gear that auto tranny gives me, I'm getting the best of both worlds. However, my Jeep came with the 3.73s. I would go with the 4.10s or the 4.56s as you said if I was going to regear.....which begs the question.....why regear a D35? Get rid of it and replace it with something a little more suited to rockcrawling if that's your style.

So the exact issue with my rear end is that my spider gears were destroyed as well as the left side of my limited slip carrier.since our fellow jeepers have been so generous to offer me their old parts I'm gonna rebuild it with those and then start looking for a 8.8

Triple88a 06-15-2008 01:09 PM

keep in mind re-gearing the rear will also require re-gearing the front or else say good bye to 4wd.

Skeezer 06-15-2008 04:26 PM

Put a locker in it

sounds like a good plan, as long as you don't wheel it too hard and stay off of the skinny pedal, you'll be ok/
