Just changed my manual transmission fluid. So glad I sold the JKU and bought a TJ, I love working on it!

You sold a JK and bought a TJ? Dont think I have seen many folks do that. I love my TJ, they are pretty easy to work on.:punk:

I have a friend that did cuz he hated the v6. he said it didn't have the low end torque he wanted. I didn't notice when he let me drive it because I have a 2.5 and its not that different. but after he got his 04 and let me drive it I did! it had a lot more lower rpm power. tjs are the way to go!

JKU was my first Jeep loved it...then I drove TJ and liked it even more. Started lurking in the TJ forums and reading all the stuff people were doing themselves and bought on. No offense to JK/JKU owners. I just like how basic TJs are.

Sorry for the spelling errors, my arm is tired from using the pump to get the RP Synchromax into my transmission. Hard to text.

There's more to love than just how simple they are, like how the fenders aren't full plastic. Or the grill isn't slanted :D

Badkarma8 10-01-2012 07:08 PM

Dude, lots of plastic on that JKU...the center console felt thinner than a plastic milk jug.

Pump? I just pop out the shifter as well as the trans cover and dump the oil in the top, this way I still have a free arm to hold a cold beer! :thumb:

Badkarma8 10-01-2012 07:14 PM

I read some people did that. When you say pop off the shifter, is that just the boot or something else under the boot. Don't laugh, I'm still learning. You had me with free hand for beer.

shatteredsoul 10-01-2012 07:23 PM

Its a little more involved but on my 98 I pop off the shifter boot and bezel, 4 small screws holding on a metal plate that covers the top of the tranny. Then there is another small dust boot at the very bottom of the shifter, you pop that up. You simply push down on a ring and turn counter clockwise about 1/4 turn, this removes the whole shifter and allows you to pour your favorite fluid through the top of the tranny.

What year is your TJ and is it 4 or 6 cylinder? If it has the ax-15 simply google ax-15 oil change there are several good write-ups with lots of pics(not sure if I can post links to other Jeep sites).

Thanks for sharing. I have the NV3550...I'm sure I can get to it through the shifter as well. I'll do a search for next time.

shatteredsoul 10-01-2012 07:42 PM

I only went this route to save a few minutes plus the cheapo hand pump I have is pure junk, I couldnt even get it to properly pump gear oil into my diffs. If you have a pretty good pump you are better off to stick to that route.

Here is a pretty good write-up from a YJ, the TJ is very similar except the metal tranny cover and I think the NV3550 is close to the AX-15 as far as the shifter.

Also I would never make fun as Im learning something about Jeeps everyday myself. My wife calls it Jeep porn and yes Im addicted.

Badkarma8 10-01-2012 08:03 PM

Same here, I'm addicted as well. I prefer the Jeep forum over the junk on tv.
