Need opinions on half doors

I'm looking at an 01 TJ with soft top and half doors (soft uppers). My last jeep had full doors and I've never been in one with half doors. I'm looking for y'all's opinions on the 2! The price is right so I'm really leaning toward this jeep. 2001, bone stock (I like that) 159K for $7900

If your are one of those that can't wait to go topless, the 1/2 doors are the way to go. Jeeps look alot better topless with 1/2 doors or no doors but not so much with full doors. Going doorless is a snap due to weight. IMO, the best setup is to have 1/2 doors with upper slider windows.(coming soon)

I prefer 2 piece doors. They can be removed and stored in the back on a whim. The full doors are not as easily stored, and weigh a ton.

And topless/doorless is my favorite thing about a jeep so I think I'll like them!

Lol I jump around a lot. I'm surprised I've made it this long without just jumping into the closest one I found for sale

Love my half doors in the late spring and early fall when I want a little breeze barrier but still have the top off. Pretty much use tube doors during summer, and WISH I had full doors for winter - Something to save for. I have the hard uppers for my half doors now and hate those.

Why don't you like the hard uppers?

Why? Is it broken latches? I was plan on getting hard sliders just for some air circulation. I know the windows are small but I have a chance to pick up a pair this week for $200. Tx winters are too mild for hardtops and full doors. I figured sliders are a good compromise.

CTX-Ross 10-02-2012 09:47 AM

Whattapunk what part of Texas are you from?

McDaniel 10-02-2012 09:58 AM

My YJ came with half doors and my TJ with full doors. I like the half doors more. Some say the zipping of the windows is a problem but I really never had a problem. If i was going to an ATM or other drive thru, I would open the door and unzip the window- simple. Also I found the half door to give more room, when i first got in the TJ with full doors, it seemed like less room behind the wheel. just my impressions. If I was to buy a JK I would order it with half doors and soft top if they even still offer a jeep that way, I dont recall ever seeing one with half doors

Jeembro 10-02-2012 10:29 AM

It's completely a personal preference thing. I'm not a fan of the half doors (hence why I've got the full doors), but I've got plenty of buddies with the half doors that love them. They say its easier when they want to offroad and look out them.

TxkTJ 10-02-2012 10:37 AM

After having the half doors, I wouldn't want anything else. It might be different if I were in Minnesota or something, but for this part of the world half doors and a soft top are ideal.
I've also got a pair of uppers with sliding windows on the list. I'd buy that $200 pair in a heartbeat.

mrobinso 10-02-2012 10:45 AM

Agree it being personal preference. My TJ came with half doors with the sliders (which are a must if you are going half doors IMHO) but ultimately I was happy to swap doors with a fellow owner for his full steel doors. Like someone else said, if you are constantly going topless, or even if you just want easy removal of the doors, the half doors are for sure the right choice. The steel doors on the other hand are much quieter on the inside than the halfs but much heavier than the half doors.

njp2295 10-02-2012 12:09 PM

I have both but the jeep came with half doors which i use most of time I want to save up for the bulldawg fiberglass sliders for winter and ditch the full doors. Also with half doors no need to go doorless really and get pulled over.

Half doors are the shiz. Of the 5 TJs I have owned, only one of them had fullsize doors and I absolutely hated them--they're heavy, they're in the way, their interior panels put your elbow at the wrong place, and more.

Half doors, OTOH, are perfect. They're light, they make the perfect armrest, you're never tempted to remove them, and they look great when the top is down/off. If you run a bikini top, it's easy to throw your soft uppers in the back on cloudy days; if it does rain, just drop them in and stay dry.

Ebxgsxr 10-02-2012 12:16 PM

i have full doors. i like having a window to roll down. but they are only on in the winter & late fall/early spring. other than that, i'm either doorless or if it rains i'll throw on my soft doors.

Jerry Bransford 10-02-2012 12:22 PM

I've had both full and half doors on both TJs I have owned and both times ended up selling the full doors. If you never lower the top or take it off, the full doors are quieter and nicer but for those of us who like to take the top off or lower it, the half doors are perfect.

Felber 10-02-2012 12:36 PM

I like full doors better because they have roll up windows when the top is up. When you take the top off you can take the doors off, which i think is better than having half doors.

Smileyt 10-02-2012 12:44 PM

I've owned both on different models. Half doors are ok but I only have the doors on when the top is on. Weight between the two is very small. Having a window is key. I'm 6'2" the half doors are to short for an armrest for me. Full doors are perfect. Just my .02

I've had all of the above, top and bottom rag doors, steel half doors, and full doors. I'm back to full doors now for the comfort level. Way less noise, and easy to roll the window up for bad weather.. or down for great weather. We take long trips, once with top and bottom rag doors, and once with top rag and bottom steel. my old rag doors are on eBay as I type.. We must be getting old ;)

GoldenSahara00 10-02-2012 12:49 PM

Half doors are the only doors ;)

Very sweet Jeep..! Half doors are my personal fav. spent a lot of time in a jeep with half doors out in Ca. I live in the Midwest now and will have to have half doors with a hard type upper. It's just my own personal opinion, but I don't mind adding seat heaters, and a little insulation in the colder months. this will be my first winter with a soft top though, so experience in the cold... I have exactly what an opinion is worth, nuthin'...

Rag top with hard doors in cold winters is fine... Just as warm and cozy as a hard top.

The sliding windows only open 6" or so. Hardly wide enough to get your "Big Mac" through at the drive through...had to switch to bite sized burgers....!

Thanks for all the input yall!! Going to talk to the dealer tomorrow hopefully!

Hahaha it's your jeep trying to get you to diet and avoid huge meals so it doesn't have to haul around a big load :p

RunninKurt 10-02-2012 03:22 PM

I would kill to find a set of half doors with hard upper sliders or even soft sliders to trade my full doors for!
