Intermittent wipers for 97 TJ ?

After driving all day in the rain the other day, I got really tired of turning the wipers off/on to account for the various conditions , and thinking how really nice it'd be to have intermittent wipers.

Has anybody switched out thier wiper switch for an intermittent one ? From what I've read, seems to be a fairly easy swap out. Has anybody done it ?

I found a switch for $20, so probably get to installing it next week.

I have Intermittent Wipers on my 97, and she was an SE.

You certain you do not? You twist the top of the wiper stalk.

Let us know pal.

JeepWrangler4x4 10-10-2012 09:44 AM

yea my 97 sport has them too

Intermittent wiper switchout

On my 2000, it was just a matter of switching the controls - plug and play with good results.

My 98 SE has just the 2-speed wipers too and after the rain yesterday and this morning, I am considering this too.

Nope, mine is simple low/high speed and off.

does just changing the switch on the column give you intermittent wipers? if if so does that switch fit in the column right? I want to do this on my 97

Yes. One from a Dodge Neon will work and is easier and cheaper to get from a salvage if you want to go that route.

wwch99tj 10-10-2012 03:13 PM

Cool I was under the impression that you needed to buy some kind of module or something to make them work...

Svt1333 10-10-2012 05:48 PM

Glad I saw this I have the same issue ill look for one out if a neon. What do you need with the stalk itself?

Wesboy 10-10-2012 06:03 PM

I got this one for my '97

WINDSHIELD WIPER DELAY 1997 TO 2006 JEEP Cherokee or Wrangler

Unplug the old controller stalk assembly, plug in the new controller and instant intermittent wipers.

tallzdatank 10-10-2012 06:28 PM

thats awesome. thanks!

Svt1333 10-10-2012 06:57 PM

That's a good site but I wonder if I can just go to a junk yard and do the neon thing posted here before or try and find a wrangler in junk yard and take wiper stalk off that I guess that would work right?

MiniMe1969 10-10-2012 07:52 PM

Yep, I got the intermittent wiper stalk from daveysjeeps.com for something like $20 and installed it in my 2000 TJ. Works great, and easy install.

In the Mopar catalog, it's part number 04793313. Switch, Right, Intermittent wiper. Wrangler parts are notoriously hard to find in most salvage yards, but the same switch was used in a lot of other Chrysler vehicles. The board won't let me post the fitment list, it's too big. Go to this link SWITCH. Right. Intermittent Wiper. (04793313 ) and find "Product Fitment/Applications. Notice it's a scrollable list. You should be able to find a vehicle on that list in any salvage pretty easily.

Hooked up my switch and now have intermittent wipers. What an easy and handy mod . I love them!

Kevbz 10-15-2012 09:59 PM

Go to a junk yard, pick out one from of the hundreds of 97-99 neons out there. Exactly the same unit as what's in a jeep. 3 screws to take the column cover off (if your a nice junkyard guy and don't just hack it off) one screw holds the unit in place, slalk and all. Undo the plug on the back and you are good. 5 bucks around here.

Won't work on 2000 or newer TJ's. Easiest way to tell is if you have your light switch on the lower left dash and not on the left stalk, your good

I have also done this upgrade on my former 2000 Wrangler SE. I just bought a new switch at the dealership and popped it in. Voila! Intermittent wipers.

BTW: 2001 was when they moved the headlight switch from the dash to the turn signal stalk.

Iceman 10-16-2012 08:46 AM

Don't suppose the same trick works with the turn signal switch?

Kevbz 10-17-2012 06:02 AM

The turn signal will swap also, but the hazard switch is a bit different. It is a push button and ours is a slide switch. You can modify the upper class shell with a dremel, or take the neon one with you. They are exactly the same also, but color matching may be off.

Iceman 10-17-2012 06:09 AM

Thanks I'm fighting a turn signal switch that doesn't engage properly, and being cheap not wanting to spend th $35 the parts store wants.

Kevbz 10-17-2012 10:03 PM

yea, I had my jeeps off a few times and when I went after the neon one, i was surprised at the de ja vue, same clam shell covers, same switches, jeep uses a torx to hold the switches to the column, dodge used a phillips...i think someone lost a bet at Jeep and torx were the outcome...freaking things are everywhere.

pastorscott 10-19-2012 09:16 PM

Just read this post- went out to autobarn and bought a intermiten switch..
I LOVE cool easy simple upgrades... I really hated on and off with my 2 speed wipers.. this is sooo cool. funny thing is the guy in the dealer didnt believe me.

I said trust me - My forum got it going on:dance:

colotj 04-13-2013 08:53 AM

I bought a whole new switch, swapped them out but still no intermittent. Mine won't "park" correctly either. Local jeep boneyard reckons I have wiring issues.

The Heep 05-08-2013 07:30 PM

Just finished the swap, super easy. After 16 years, I now have intermittent wipers, score!
