Simple Poll on Head Problem with Pentastar 3.6L

There have been several previous polls but most of them allowed people with too few miles on their Jeeps to vote. Some folks voted that they did not have the problem but later on it turned out that they did.

There is only one requirement in this poll for 2012 JK owners and that is that they have at least 12,000 miles on their Jeeps. Yes, it can take longer than that for the problem to surface in some cases, but if the limit is set too high we will have too few votes. In most cases the problem will have shown up by 12K miles.

Even if you have voted in previous polls, if you have at least 12K miles on your Jeep, please vote again in this poll.

This poll is open ONLY to those with at least 12K miles on their Jeeps, whether they have had a confirmed head problem or not.

Only CONFIRMED head problems count, not just ticking or CELs.

If people cooperate, this should be a very informative poll.

Cant vote, my Jeep only has 2k on it since April. It will be awhile till I get 12k but no head problem yet.

Hey Tomster!

you know... after getting the rig last october [first mopar vehicle] i joined the site. then came the infamous ticking threads. the paranoia seed was sowed. later my rig went on to ping and knock... the first dealership stated my heads needed replaced. PANIC STRICKEN!

well... 1 year and 16k later, i am pleased to state the only head problem i have sits above the shoulders ;)

new gas station/higher octane elevated the ping/knock.. the condition wasn't "bad" but was enough to annoy me. hasn't pinged since

i decided to stay away from the ticking threads and my anxiety has regained normal levels. the rig is doing GREAT!

That's fantastic, JK! I hope your good luck continues with your Jeep. Keep us posted.

So you use mid grade, 89 octane, or what?

Tom, these polls you keep starting are flawed.

Please add your vote if you have 12K or more miles on your 2012 JK.

Tomster 10-18-2012 06:09 AM

If this poll is going to tell us anything we need more participation.

Tomster 10-18-2012 10:07 AM

Would you guys who vote in the poll that you have not had a problem mind posting in this thread how many miles you have on your Jeep?

Also, you guys who have had a problem, would you post and tell us how many miles you had on your Jeep when the problem was confirmed?

CombatChuk 10-18-2012 10:47 AM

I just cracked 16k miles this morning, and no check engine light for a head problem...

lolpetewtf 10-18-2012 11:42 AM

Uh, you never told us the results of the last 10 polls you made.

panthermark 10-18-2012 02:14 PM

Tomster....give it a few more months (to see if any AC heads start to tick)...and it might be time to jump back in. I bet you can work a nice deal on a 2013 in late December.

Well according to Jeep....poor quailty gas and some undisclosed way of driving is the cause. Of course...that didn't stop them from redesigning the head....twice.

Just read through the "ticking" thread. Some tick...some don't. Nothing you can do about it right now.

Drive it. If the CEL comes on take it to the dealer. Simple as that.

dirtybiketrash 10-19-2012 10:46 AM

I apologize, I voted before I read the conditions. I do not have a head problem, but I only have about 4,900-miles to date. Sorry.

mackdj1 10-19-2012 11:08 AM

Mines to young to vote (only 3000 miles) but no problems yet.:whistling:

No problem. Let's hope your vote is still good when you do have the 12K miles. :)

Tomster 10-21-2012 11:46 AM

back to top for more votes

Roadglider09 10-21-2012 12:38 PM

I had 18k on my 12JKU before it started to tick. Dealer diagnosed as a bad head and replaced it.

the rock99 10-21-2012 01:02 PM

Over 22,000 miles and no problems so far

7k no problems.

Lucy Brown 10-22-2012 12:56 PM

Has there been a poll on 13's with this problem. I'd be interesed to know if there are any confirmed 13's with the ticking problem.

no 13s have been confirmed with head problems on this site. no problems reported with the new AC head on 12s either. AC head should be present on 13s starting in september. not enough miles yet to declare anything

mcgee10 10-22-2012 02:03 PM

A few months back in another post like this I wrote that my dealer had only replaced 7 heads. He stated he sold 265 jeep wranglers and a few of them he replaced the heads on they were bought from smaller dealers. When I asked the service manager last week how many they have changed he told me the last 3 they changed weren't on wranglers. I did not know that this engine was in any other models other than wrangler I guess I was wrong. Service manager showed me a print out from jeep saying to date confirmed head replacement is at 0.57% of vehicle produced. He said that brakes down to about 3 out of 1000. I know if your one of those people that has one of them it's still all bad for you. The service manager showed me a service update from jeep that said all dealers have been made aware that until all of them have been fixed the warranty on the engine will never expire. When I asked what that means he said he Thinks they all will be fixed when ever the problem arises. He also told me jeep knows with in a few how many are bad just no what jeeps the engines were installed in. Second hand new take it for what it is. He looked like he was sincere when he told me, I asked him if I could have the print out what do you think he said.

Tomster 10-22-2012 02:25 PM

I think all you have to do is read the mile long thread "update on ticking pentastar" (or something like that) and check out the poll results to see that the 0.57% figure is WAY low.

Yeah, how is 0.57% possible. The poll here is almost at 30%
