newbie lift question
 
just bought a 99 sahara. it now has 30 x9.5 inch cooper tires that i bought . i assume everything else on the jeep is the standard that it came with.
I basically do not know anything about jeeps.
When I went to the tire store and told them I wanted to try to make the jeep a bit higher up or rugged looking they basically told me the above tires would be best as I drive highway and city and that it would be at risk for tipping over.
My question is waht compromise can I come up with to put some lift into this vehicle.? I kinda want some bigger tires and some lift but am not an off road person .How safe is it to drive on a highway with 33 inch tires and a lift?
How highto go in the lift? max tire size? also does anyone know waht other parts I would need besides say a lift kit and the bigger ?33x12.5 tires etc.

Lost here. also do you think if I brought it to my regular mechanic he could give me advice? m\

This all depends on how much money you want to sink into it.
I wouldn't put 33's on a stock D-30 axle; about $800+ to up-grade for street use. You need 4" of lift for 33's (and rim back-space of 3 1/2" I think), you need a SYE/drive shaft if the TC rises more than 2".

31's will fit with a 1" body lift. If you're scared of turning over, put a better roll-cage on it and maybe some armor.

I'd say you want to spend your money based on your needs. If you are primarily street driving this rig and just want it to look better then you can do so for a minimal financial concern. You can do a 1" Body Lift and a 2" Spring Spacer setup to clear 33" tires easily. You'll have no worries with your axles running 33" tires.

i have 6" of lift and 35s and feel safe on the highways to drive without my anti sway bars on so..

Welcome John. I wouldn't necessarily really on a normal mechanic unless he really knows something about jeeps. The folks on here are probably the most knowledgeable, but sometimes there are various opinions. I have not yet lifted my jeep, but I will throw my 2 cents out there and others can hopefully correct me if I'm wrong. I'm currently looking at the same setup for my 98 sport. I want 33x12.50s for a little off-road use, but probably nothing to extreme that I couldn't do with stock. Also, I am biased against the bodylift. Anyway, my plan is to get the "Rubicon Express 3.5" lift with the RE monotube shocks. There are two variants of this lift: standard (~$600) and superflex (~$900). I will most likely go with the superflex. Because of the amount of lift the transfer case will need to be dropped. Some will say that a SYE/driveshaft will be needed and others say it will not. With a bodylift combination this can be avoided. So something to keep in mind. Other things to keep in mind: Speedometer correction, fender coverage laws, gearing (I'm leaving mine alone)... Total cost I expect to incur is $2500. $3500 if things don't go as expected. Someone correct me if I'm way off here. Also, I do plan to do the work myself in my small garage with my common set of tools... fingers crossed for good luck. ;)

As for tipping over, the 12.50" wide tires gives a 6" wider stance while the lift I mentioned puts the jeep 5" higher (3.5" from the lift and 1.5" from the tires). It still ain't a sports car though. My guess is you've got to do something stupid to tip one... I could be wrong though.

ajtudor, keep in mind you need shocks. the re lift prices you listed dont include shocks.
as far as body lifts.. i have a 2" bl and it has been strong ever since i installed it. Simply it allows you to run bigger tires on less bump stops.

Right. There's nothing wrong with a BL, just a personal preference.

Trip, are you running a standard D35 with 3.73 gears? What kind of shocks do you have and how do you like them? I'm considering OME or RE, but still open for options.

Ok, I have 4" and 33" tires and I do 90 mph daily without any problems, knock on wood. You can run 33" tires with a 3" lift no prob if you don't off road. And if someone tells you you need a SYE kit, they're lying to get more $ out of ya. I have 4" of lift and no SYE. You may need to lower the t-case skid plate, but thats cheap and easy.


p.s.- the D30 axle can take up to 35" tires without issue, the d35 probably can take 35" tires if you don't abuse it.

OME is the way to go! I wish I had them.

yes standard d35 and 3.73 gears. Its been holding on strong for now (knock on wood). I had Rough Country shocks and they suck. I got some omes and i'm pretty satisfied with them
