Big Bear - July 5th

I am going to be up there for the holiday weekend and plan on doing some wheeling on the 5th. Who is interested?

I'm off on the 6th and would be interested in coming up there for the day. Are you planning on running anything on Sunday?

I probably won't be able to on Sunday. Not even sure that I will still be up there that day. Sorry...

man you guys are lucky to have a place like that near by.. there is basically no wilderness here.. real wilderness is like 3-4 hours away 4 me.

Yeah - it is pretty cool. My family has a place up there - had it since I was 5. So I got to grow up with a cabin in the mountains that was hour and a half to two hours away.

I should be up there. Let me know what you guys plan on doing. ill have the jeep but i really need to take it easy on her. pismo was a pretty hard weekend. Its what i get for chasing prerunners through the woops and jumps. DOH

Wayne should be up here that weekend and hopefully frank (the guy with the monster scout)
He actually sold the scout and bought a unimog.

Sweet - look forward to it.

No idea what we are running, but I am assuming that with it being 4th of July weekend - it will be pretty busy. So I was thinking maybe just a nice easy Gold Mountain and Jacoby Canyon (I think that is the name of it at least).

Ended up going with my Uncle. Ran Gold Mountain and Jacoby Canyon. Got a nice early start to avoid traffic. Only saw 2 other Jeeps the whole time. But I heard that the trails looked like a Costco parking lot later in the day.

Nice little test run to try out the Aussie locker in the front - must say - locker good!

I think I saw you up there. It was crazy busy. Where is Jacoby Canyon. I did Gold Mountain and couldn't even get on JB.

emills 08-03-2008 03:34 PM

I only saw two Jeeps the whole day and that was on Jacoby Canyon. I managed to get through before the rush hour traffic started! :)

Jacoby comes off of Holcomb valley Road and heads south to HWY 18 in the high desert. The trail head for that is over closer to abandoned mine. It is 3N61 I think.

We were up there again yesterday and ran Gold Mountain to John Bull. I just rode shotgun that day. We managed to break the steering arm off of the top of the knuckle on a CJ-7 with a HP 60 front. Sheared two of the three bolts holding the arm in place. That was fun to get out of there.

I love Gold Mountain, but I don't think I've ever done Jacoby Canyon. Any pics?

Gilez 08-03-2008 04:44 PM

So how did you get out of that predicament?

emills 08-03-2008 08:08 PM

Tiny:

Those three pics above are Jacoby. It is a medium trail - nothing you would even need 4wd for.

Gilez:

We tightened the remaining bolt as much as we could and drove maybe 2 mph off the trail. Luckily, we were almost at the end - so one small group of rocks and then Holcomb Creek Rd. Then the owner of the Jeep and I got the lucky job of driving down the mountain to get his tow rig and trailer so he could get his Jeep home safely. Not how I would normally want to spend 4 hours of my day.

Rawkon 08-03-2008 11:48 PM

Dude eric you shoulda called me, i had my truck and trailer in big bear. I was up there working on jeeps all weekend at my parents house.

Gilez 08-04-2008 09:17 AM

That's a rough way to end the weekend. I go up to Big Bear all the time. And I often wonder how I will get home if something serious breaks. I suppose AAA can always tow if you have premiere membership. :)

emills 08-04-2008 09:20 AM

I actually thought of calling you - but I got a new cell and don't have your number in it. Can you PM it to me again?

Eric

Gilez 08-04-2008 09:28 AM

I am planning another trip up to Big Bear on the 21st of August. If anyone is around it would be fun to do a trail together. I am hoping its not busy like it was on the 4th.

emills 08-04-2008 10:03 AM

21st? That is a thursday - I will be at work. Can't take any vacation right now.
