I know this may sound foolish but how concerned should I be with the word RUST rust?

Hi all. I am new to this forum. I'm not a jeep owner yet, but will be soon. I am looking for an older TJ just to tool around with for now. I Donít expect to do much mudding but maybe trails. With that being said, here goes my question. The Jeep Iím looking at is a 2000 Wrangler, V6, 5spd, 4.0l with 114k miles. The price seems fair at around 5k. however, here's the issue I'm concerned with. The sellers comment is:

"the frame has some rust which has caused the skid plate (needs replacement) to come detached on drivers side. Also, passenger side running board has broken off. So that will need to be replaced as well"

I know this sounds foolish but how concerned should I be? Normally, the word RUST means run to me. Is this something that may be able to be fixed pretty easily or not. I have asked for pictures but nothing yet.
Any help or information would be appreciated.
Thanks, Scott.

Pics are worth 1000 words on here but frame rust...other than light surface rust is a deal breaker for me.

I had the same problem with the skid plate. Cost me 250-300 to fix that. But that also means your gonna have to power wash and degrease the frame. Sand or grind it. Paint it. And pray the rest of the rust is just surface rust Another problem is, the skid plate also supports the trans. So how long has that been broken? Cause that could put stress on the tranny bolts.

I searched for my TJ for six months before I found one that was a) reasonably priced and b) didn't have serious rust issues. Rust was, is and always will be a deal breaker for me. My 99 has some surface spots and the gas tank skid will need replacing eventually, but the rest of the frame and such was in mint condition... Buyer beware.

If the skid already tore the frame I wouldn't touch.

If you're asking here you already have a gut feeling about it. Go with your gut. Down the line you would be glad you spent more money now rather than chasing issues related to rust.
Your gut is telling you run Forrest run!

If you are looking for a project, like jigsaw puzzles, Lincoln Log house designing, or radio controlled airplanes, this would be an opportunity to consider, but..... if you don't have a lot of time and money, look elsewhere.

It would have to be a tremendous deal for me to even think about it. It will take some serious time devoted or $$$ to fix properly....and I have neither. I beleive I would walk away and look for something better.

What are the worst areas of rust for a 97-00 TJ?

b1969k 10-24-2012 11:34 AM

Looks like it is unanimous and just what I thought. Iíll pass on this one. But thanks for all of the replies and information. I will keep looking. If anyone knows of any TJís for sell in the southeast or where I can go other than Craigslist, please let me know.

Thanks again, Scott

yea 5k for a 2000 is cheap around here. My guess is it is that cheap because the frame is probably swiss cheese
