Heads up New Rubicon owners

Not sure if you guys saw my earlier post about the "flashing lights."

The video is at bottom.

Anyway, the Jeep has been at the dealer 3x now, and they could not find the problem. They replaced the ABS module, but it did not fix anything.

I just got a call from the dealer (they have had it for 4 days now) and Chrysler has issued an "internal" bulletin (not a TSB, I asked) that the actuators on the sway bar disconnect system are NOT water sealed and are letting water in. This is causing all sorts of electrical problems, hence the gauge cluster and dash acting all crazy.

Keep an eye on your Rubis, especially as the wetter weather is upon us.

Thanks for the heads up. Picking up my Rubicon tomorrow.

rfortune 10-25-2012 07:06 PM

Thanks for the heads up. Hope they get it fixed right for you and we don't start to see a bunch of similar issues.

traitor08 10-25-2012 07:13 PM

Can you unplug the disco

fljeepleo 10-25-2012 07:15 PM

I hope there is a TSB in the works for this!

Bloomer 10-25-2012 07:16 PM

Mine is supposed to arrive tomarrow and this post makes me nervous. If they knew about it maybe they fixed the issue with newer builds.

SBL 10-25-2012 07:23 PM

Thanks for the heads up. Mine is in D1. Hopefully they are able to get a fix now that they know about it.

Dakovich 10-25-2012 07:45 PM

Are you losing power, or is it just lights and the speedo goes to "0"?

No loss of anything, just the speedo and the lights acting up.

Note - I bought my 2012 in July (the start of the dry season here in Portland) but did some deep water stuff on Labor Day (it submerged the sway bar disco unit).

Not sure if it started with that or the recent rains we have been receiving.

Dealership called, they need my rig all weekend. The part arrived missing parts (wow) and they needed to re-order from Chrysler.

I'll post updates here.

Scott

Good question....but I did not try this before handing the Jeep over to the dealer.

There are a lot of threads making me nervous.

Being forced to find the time to get any of these issues fixed is a concern. I am often on call when I am not at work and I consider my time off to be valuable.

Yup, I wanted a Jeep when I was younger and loved the one I rented while on vacation in Oahu a few years ago. At the time I just didn't want to give up one of my other cars to give it space in the garage. Now, I'd be will to drop the Audi and give its spot to the Jeep if it just wasn't beginning to read like Jeep sells cars using the "there's a sucker born every minute" philosophy.

Money isn't the main issue and I assume that to be the case for most people looking at the higher end Jeeps these days. but what worries me is having to take my time to deal with a problem Jeep sold to me because I was a "sucker" in their minds. I am a physician and almost always on call even when I am not at the hospital I can't say I won't be called back at a moments notice. Getting to a dealership requires massive amounts of planning and schedule changing on my part. My wife doesn't know shit about cars so they'd tell her they fixed the flux capacitor and changed the headlight fluid and she'd happily walk away.

Sure a Jeep is still a unique product. There is nothing else like it on the market and I would honestly love to have one that was at least built to the quality standards of other cars in the price bracket. But just based on all of my reading while combing forums in between patients, it really does appear to have more quality control issue than any other car I've ever looked in to.

I started reading about this stuff because my dad had a Dodge truck some years ago and within a few years everything but the Cummins fell apart or stopped working. The steering wheel literally fell off while he was driving that truck. He turned around to look behind him while he was backing up and the steering wheel popped off like it had been duct tapped on. We just looked at each other like...did that really just happen?
Before I buy one to use for a daily driver and take hunting and off roading trips i want to know I am not going to have shit like the OP posted happening or have water leaking in causing me to culture mold all over the place.

Please don't take my post as a dig on the Jeep, I do really like what they offer it. I like them and I may end up ordering one but I will say that if another company that cared about putting out a quality product made something similar, I'd be all over it in an instant.

Most 2012 owners don't have any of these problems.

Please provide the make and model of any vehicle, and in 15 minutes I'll be able to produce an equally "scary" list.

So what did they do? If they're not sealed, are they replacing them with redesigned sealed ones? With 200,000+ of these on the road, why aren't we seeing this problem reported all over the place(especially here, where many people ford water).

Something just doesn't make sense here.

109 Rider 10-26-2012 07:09 PM

Thanks.
Have 2013 JKUR for a month now. Went through few good showers.
No problem at all.

SeaComms 10-26-2012 07:44 PM

Have seen many posts down here too of the Rubi doing the same thing, pulling the plug from the sway bar fixed the problem too.

I have the same symptoms in my work car (Mitsubishi Outlander) with intermittant speedo and tacho dropping to 0, dash looking like a christmas tree etc. So far they have only found one error code - loss of communications with BCM (main computer loosing connection with body control computer).

X2...no problems here either.

Thanks for the heads up though!

SilverSport 10-26-2012 08:13 PM

Pulling the plug would eliminate the electrical issues, but then there is nothing to keep water and dirt out of the open connection on the e-disco. Plus the OP paid for a Rubi so he should be able to expect it to work without causing issues.

scottmphoto 10-29-2012 03:56 PM

So last night I piked up my Jeep. Looked good.

But this morning, the dash lit up again. Back to the dealership.

scottmphoto 11-05-2012 12:22 AM

Hey everyone -

I have been driving a crappy Liberty loaner around for almost a week now.

Dealership called and it looks like I need an entire dash instrument cluster.

I'll keep you posted!

Scott

Remind me again why I bought an American vehicle???

taoshum 11-05-2012 09:44 AM

I bet there's a ground wire loose or intermittent... every time I hear about these electronic gizmos flashing, it turns out to be a poor ground connection somewhere. Just sayin'

I hope it is something as simple as that.

If not, I might need to lawyer up.

craigwieck 11-05-2012 03:43 PM

If we all stopped buying cars biased on stories we hear on forums we all would be riding bikes. I hope they get it fixed for you soon. As some that worked as a mechanic for 12 years at a ford dealer I always felt bad when someone spent a lot of money on a new car and it had problems with them.

scottmphoto 11-09-2012 01:08 AM

So....just a quick update.

Chrysler really did not want to replace the dash cluster. So, they ran a ton of tests and found out that the Sway Bar actuator they replaced last week was actually the wrong P/N.

So, they ordered another one, and it will be here on Tuesday. SO, just another week has gone by without my Jeep.

I'll keep u all posted on what happens next.

Scott

Cascadian 11-09-2012 01:33 AM

Is this a potential problem with all Rubis or just the 2012's and newer? Mine is an '08 so I'm hoping I avoided this problem, but I don't see why they would have changed the sway bar disco motor from one year of jk's to another. I know, you'd think I'd know if mine would be an issue by now since it's an '08, but it's only about 3 months old to me. I've only taken it through some deep puddles a few times since it's been such a dry year up until October.

scottmphoto 11-14-2012 04:28 PM

So I have an update....

Chrysler has determined the sway bar actuator is the root of the problem. They are working with the manufacturer on a fix, but for me it looks like at least a month until a new unit is in my rig and the sway bar disco is usable.

They tried installing a non-US part number in my Jeep but it was not working.

Another interesting thing is that Chrysler is now being inundated with similar issues, so the problem is spreading. Heads up.

LMT Rubi 11-14-2012 06:31 PM

Interesting thread, thank you for the heads up amigo! :thumb:

I am going to drive my rig through a pond just to make sure it is ok...
