Dumb question but I'm looking to trade my tires with a friend. I have 35 inch tires 12.5 width, 15 inch rim. He has 33 inch tires, 12.5 width, 17 inch rims. Because the rim size difference does this mean we can't trade?

You are correct, his tires have a 17" opening for the wheel, your 15" wheels aren't big enough for them.

If the tires stay on the rims for the trade and the lug bolt measuments are the same, you can install the 17" rims on yours, but he will have to check to see if his brakes will clear a 15" rim depending on what vehicle his has.
oooh, also check the rim backspacing measurements.
