replacing pinion bearings... need help fast!
 
Does anyone know how to change the inner and outer pinion bearings in a d35 and d30? I would really appreciate a quick reply. My front has been bad for a while, i can grab the drive shaft and shake it, so i took the shaft off, but recently the back has been going bad as well byt not as bad... its my dd so please help! Thanks everyone!

make sure it isn't just a loose pinion nut first. If it is the bearings, the old ones have to be pressed off, new ones pressed on with new crush sleeve, and the rotational resistance has to be measured with an inch/lbs wrench. (That is the bearing pre-load.) Backlash may need to be re-adjusted.

So it sounds pretty hard... Just went out there to check on it and there is differential fluid leaking everywhere...

If I had the tools I would do it myself. I don't have a shop press, or the appropriate jigs to do the bearings, the wrench should be easy to rent though. I feared mine was bad too, but it turned out that the nut was a hard fart away from falling off of the back of the pinion shaft!

So i would have to drop the axle and take everything apart?

For the most part. Axles taken out, and diff carrier removed.

Bearing races need to be replaced too probably. Torque on the carrier bolts is very important too.

Honestly would it be easier to go to the junk yard and pick up a d44?

Probably not since you rarely find a dana44 bolt in with matched gears to your from Dana 30

it's not bad if you have the right tools. it's just time consuming and tedious. if you do it yourself, take your time and make sure you do everything correctly.

Your gonna wanna look at the ring and pinion to make sure you didn't break any teeth.

Yeah i checked it all. Everything is fine. So glad that was the only problem... put new oil in as well...

Good job. Just for some general info. How much do you torque the pinion nuts? I have heard some say just 150ft/lbs. some say impact wrench. What is the proper way to not damage the crush sleeve.

that is the thing. It has to be torqued down just enough to achieve the bearing pre-load. That is measured by rotational resistance. It can be different depending on what axle you have. And probably comes down to whether Bob made the sleeve on a Monday, or Bill made another on a Thursday. It can be anywhere from 150-300 from my understanding. I hope that makes sense....

It does make sense, but not knowing that exacty is making my decision of regearing very hard. Is there like a rule of thumb or something?

i redid all my bearings and R&P in my D35 not to long ago, it takes a lot of torque to crush a new crush sleeve.. i literally had to take breaks using my whole body weight.. the axle was still on my jeep and i just had it up on stands in my garage.. it was a pita to do, should have did my spider gears too cuz they makin some noise now but oh well my 8.8 is sitting in the garage waiting to be worked on
