New wheels - stock tires?
 
Newbie question here - I'm looking to upgrade my wheels, but I'd prefer to keep the stock tires. I'm driving a JK Sport 2-dr, and liked the look of these guys:
AEV Conversions 20403007AA - AEV 17x8.5 Savegre Wheel in Textured Black with 5x5.5 Bolt Pattern for Larger Axles - Quadratec

...but the bolt pattern is non-stock, and I'm not to a point where I'll be changing that. Stock is P255/75R17, so my understanding is that I can run a wheel size of 17 x 6.5-8.5".

Here's the question - has anyone else done this, and what do you recommend? I'm partial to the matte black wheels, just haven't found one that seems to work (yet).

Of course. You're just looking at the wrong version of those wheels. Here's the version with the stock bolt pattern:

Just choose the black color from the drop down box and you're good to go. Keep in mind Q-tec is a sponsoring vendor here, so you may be able to get free shipping if you order via PMing the rep. :thumb:

Also, FYI, there are many, many different types of black wheels that fit. Many will be much less expensive than these AEVs, as AEV is a "high end" company with premium prices. Nothing wrong with these wheels of course, but there are cheaper choices if that matters to you.

Cheaper would be nice - I'm planning on just saving for them, so it's not going to be an immediate upgrade. AEV is definitely more expensive - unfortunately I haven't found one yet that is similar. Matte black with circular cut outs is the look I'm going for, and I've seen others that have about twice as many cut outs, but they're also gloss black rather than textured.

Sometimes there's only one, as long as you're looking you should get a sense of what the alternatives are. A set of Crager Soft 8s would save you quite a bit of money obviously. Or take a look at these: http://m.discounttire.com/dtcs/wheel...27705&pc=69358

Just remember that the stock tires only have about 7.8" of tread width (BFGs) and so on a 8.5" wheel they might look a little odd. But they'll definitely work.

That's another issue I'm not too familiar with. Beyond looking a little off (only spreading it out by 3/4" or so), are there any safety issues with doing this? I do some off roading occasionally, but it's also my DD that goes on the highway frequently, so I'm trying to keep it reasonable.

At the extremes sure, but I wouldn't expect too much issue here. The biggest risk is that when you go offroad you're more likely to pop a bead if you air down.

Also take a look at ProComp wheels, which is another relatively affordable brand with a lot of style choices.

And as I advise everybody, you should at least price check (New 15" wheels + new tires for 15" wheels) versus (New 17" wheels + new tires for 17" wheels). Maybe do it for 16" wheels/tires too. Larger wheels, and the tires for them, are generally more expensive. The money savings created by going with 15s for example can be significant.

No matter which way you go, remember you can recoup some cash by selling your current tires/wheels on Craigslist.

Understood. I'll be doing some more shopping around - I know AEV is trusted, and am just not familiar with the options yet. Smaller tires would save cash...but I'm not a huge fan of how the JK looks with smaller tires. I've seen a couple around town, and there's just something a little off. Just personal preference. But I'll probably price 16's, just don't want to drop all the way down to 15's. Since the wheels are basically brand new (only 3000 miles on them), I'll definitely be listing them to recoup some cost.

To be clear, in your post above you meant "smaller wheels," correct? The tires size would stay the same--i.e., you can get 32" or 33" or whatever size tires for 15" wheels just as easily as you can for 17" wheels.

Right, sorry. I'm planning on staying with stock tires and only getting new wheels, so that's why I say I'm looking at 17's. If I can get the cash together, I'd like to get duratracs instead, but I'm not sure if they're available in a 17.

Now for some really basic questions:

Alloy vs steel? Steel being heavier and more sturdy for off-road use, but also prone to rust. Anything else I should know? For a DD, would alloy be better choice?

I assume a 17x8 would be easier than a 17x9 (if keeping stock tires)?

Duratracs only seem to be available in these 17" sizes:

Alloys are a better choice for a daily driver. Less weight, less wear and tear, less impact on mileage. They're more expensive than steelies, however.

The downside to alloys is that if you break an alloy wheel while offroading, you can't hammer it back into a reasonably round position--it's busted, and that's it. Steelies can be hammered back into round, are cheaper, and are more traditional.

8" wide wheels are going to be more common than 9" wide wheels, and yeah, 8" wheels will be fine. As to tire sizes, use this thread in conjunction with this online utility. :thumb:

Awesome - thanks. I'd been browsing that topic, there's a lot of great information there. Also realized at the same time that there's an entire wheel/tire section...so sorry about posting in the wrong place!

What you are planning is what I'm running now. I have ATX teflon coated 17x8 wheels with my stock 255/75/17 bfg tires. My wheeling buddies were telling me I would need bigger tires to stay with them when off roading, but so far they can't show me that. They are going no where I can't go and in some places I'm doing better than they are.
Until my set up show me I can't get somewhere I'm staying with it until they wear out some. I'm not giving or throwing away tires with 8500 miles on them.

Thanks - that's exactly what I wanted to hear. I'll upgrade my tires eventually too, but I'm trying to hold off due to cost. So far I haven't had any issues with the stock tires, but I'd like to get something that's better in winter weather (Duratracs or similar).
