Semi vs jku

Yup, as the title says. You are about to see the carnage of my JKU vs a Semi tractor trailer from Tuesday night. This happened on my way home from work on I-40 in Albuquerque. Semi driver was sleeping, and decided to plow into me, which in turn caused me to take out 3 other vehicles while we were driving about 5 mph. Truck driver was doing about 45mph and didn't stop until after he made impact with my Jeeps ass. I walked away (actually transported by ambulance) with minor injuries. Jeeps are tough with the right equipment. Enjoy.

As you can see from the pics, the Hanson Offroad bumpers took the hit, and saved my ass! The car in front of me was opened up like an aluminum can from my front bumper which only received some scratches. The rear bumper/tire carrier and spare tire, hi-lift jack absorbed most of the impact from the big rig. The force was great enough to shear off my driver and rear passenger seat brackets that hold the seats to the floor. This in turn caused my to hit the top of my head on the roof panel which I am thankful was covered with acoutic padding. The impact also broke the driveshafts, and chromoly control arms on my Rubicon Express long arm kit. The explosion like impact shook me up, but the Jeep held up, and I am alive to tell you all. By the way, I have a purchase order for a 2013 JKU Rubicon that I take delivery on this weekend! :thumb:

Jeeps can be replaced but you can't. Glad you weren't seriously injured. :thumb:

Wow. Glad you are alright! I never "enjoy" seeing anything like this happen to a fellow Jeeper, or anyone for that matter. Shows how a resilient a Jeep can be despite their poor crash test ratings. Nice to see you chose another Jeep :thumb: Once again, sorry about your Jeep but happy you're OK. :flowers:

LilYeller 11-08-2012 09:46 PM

F crumple zones... Build it to last! Gald you are ok and I have to ask, did anything happen to the front doors? they look pretty straight to me.

wranglermatt4527 11-08-2012 09:50 PM

WOW.... Glad to see youre ok. This should be a commercial for Hanson OffRoad products. They really are a lifesaver. Now its time to build up the '13. LOL.

dieselgiant 11-08-2012 09:51 PM

Man those pics are troubling to look at. Did you see it coming or was it a surprise?
Glad your ok!

lo lo 11-08-2012 10:02 PM

Those bumpers were awesome, and I will be building the 2013 up almost like this one, but with a few more goodies. I didn't see the impact coming, luckily, or else I may have tensed up and really been hurt. The front doors were tweaked a little, but not bad. The rear frame turned into a pretzel as seen in one of the pics. All I remember is looking at all the brake lights in front of me moving slowly, and then a huge explosion and glass flying everywhere. I was dazed for a few minutes, and then started feeling minor injuries in my leg, back, neck, and head.

amarillojeepguy 11-08-2012 10:08 PM

i bought my jeep in albequerque from christian over at mark casas jeep...they gave me a good deal. im glad your ok though.....i wonder how well my 2 door would have handled that?

LilYeller 11-08-2012 10:09 PM

Thats amazing, cause the rear is mangled and the front (which actually went through someones trunk) looks nearly perfect. I might have to save this link for those occasions where someone says the wrangler isnt safe.

wranglermatt4527 11-08-2012 10:17 PM

Now that you mention it Yeller, my father in law is gonna look at this thread whether he likes it or not. I am told everytime I see him how unsafe Jeeps are. Again lo lo... Im really glad youre ok. I was a fire fighter for 10 years and from first hand experience, this coulda been alot worse. Good luck with the '13 build and be sure to keep us updated. Lots and lots of pics.

Moabrubi 11-08-2012 10:20 PM

Doesn't get much safer than that! I don't think a 5 star safety rated car would have faired as well. You kept your winch I'm assuming?

mckey73 11-08-2012 10:22 PM

What a crappy night, glad you are ok. Did you happen to get any pics of the back seats where they broke?

lo lo 11-08-2012 10:24 PM

I appreciate the comments everyone. The firefighters and EMTs on the scene even told me that the modifications on my Jeep are what saved me, or else I could of been crushed from the impact.

lo lo 11-08-2012 10:29 PM

I didn't get a picture of the sheared seat mounting brackets yet, but my Jeep is still at the storage lot, so maybe tomorrow. I will probably see if I can salvage a few parts, but the semi drivers insurance adjuster is already re-imbursing me for everything, plus extra $ for my inconvenience for the property damage claim. The big payout will be after I setttle my injuries claim. But if they let me keep the winch and Rigid LEDs, then I will take them. :)

Rick_W 11-08-2012 10:36 PM

Glad you are ok! As said - this could have been so much worse.

Darkfire 11-08-2012 10:46 PM

Hey buddy I'm glade u made it out alive! If u need help striping that one let me know

Aftahour 11-08-2012 10:51 PM

Glad ur ok. Guess the aftermarket bumpers really do help.

the Kolector 11-08-2012 10:58 PM

Thats crazy! Glad you are ok, I assume the your son wasn't in there with you, guessing from your frst pic, as others sttated, the JK and be replaced, you can't.

Lithium Lotus 11-08-2012 11:01 PM

It looks like the bumper acted as brace between the two frame rails and took the brunt of the impact. I highly doubt the factory bumper would have done anything.

Farnham21 11-08-2012 11:37 PM

Showing to fiancée how could she let me cruise around with stock bumpers when the aftermarket could save my life! Goo thing you had a four door I don't know if the two door people would be here to talk about it now :(

glad you are ok. those are some crazy pics.

GeckoJK 11-08-2012 11:56 PM

Wow, glad you are ok. That Jeep is scrap now. This is why I would never put one of those rear facing seats in the cargo area with my kid in it!
