Gear ratios
 
So I've been seeing a lot of post on here about changing gears for different sized tires. I'm new to this 4 wheelin stuff being I just bought my 03 tj, and it's got a 4" lift with 35x12.5x20 rockstar rims with nitto mud grapplers. After reading these post I realized this is why I've been having so much trouble with shifting while going up and down hills. So what size would best Hugo for this setup.? Thanks

Typo... What size gears do I need to switch to? 4.56 or 4.88?

4.88 I would say, can depend on your trans but with 35s and a manual you want a deep as you can go.

Will 4.88 gears rev the Rpm's to high for interstate driving? I have to drive 30 min down the interstate in order to get to work. Its down a mountain there then 12 hours later its back up the mountain for the ride home.

i would run 4.88s with 35s if it was mine.

The correct/optimal axle ratio depends on your engine and transmission type... what engine and transmission type (automatic, 5-speed, or 6-speed) do you have?

I have the straight six cylinder (4.0) with a 5 speed manual transmission.

Based on that, 4.88 will be ideal for your 35" tires.

Well it looks like the 4.88s have it then. Looked on you tube to see if it was something I could do myself but it doesn't look like I'd be able to. I would need some sort of press to get the bearings out which I don't have. Any idea how much it would cost me?

Labour can go from 200-way too much per axle. I feel like 250 is a rather common price per axle.

Have the installing shop provide all parts, that way they will warranty everything... parts and labor. If you instead bought the parts & they installed them, they would just blame your parts if something went wrong after the install... which is not uncommon due to the complexity of installing them.

Total parts & labor costs for both axles cost me <$1100 the last time & just over $1300 the first time... some shops will quote sky-high prices on their initial quote and hope you will not argue or ask for a lower price that they will usually give if you push them hard enough.

I'm running the same set-up with 4.88 gears. The mud grapplers are a heavy tire and you need all the help you can get. You wont feel like your making any power, but you wont be runing back and forth through gears. I also run it interstate at a steady 70-75 mph without problem. It does rev a little high but its not bad.

Your engine only revs "a little high" when compared to a car with small tires. For a Jeep with the aerodynamics of a barn door running big heavy tires like your 35's, your RPMs are right where they should be... assuming your configuration is really the same as the OP's... with the 5-speed manual transmission. :)
