Ipad 4 vs Nexus 10 vs everything

Which do you prefer amongst the jeep crowd here and why? How do you primarily use your tablet and did you make the jump fully from a netbook or laptop style pc?

Mr.Bill 11-15-2012 09:28 AM

I just bought a NEXUS 7 last night... now trying to figure out what to do to it..

ESP 11-15-2012 09:34 AM

Did price keep you from getting the 10 instead or was it something else?

Mr.Bill 11-15-2012 09:43 AM

I got the 7 for $195 and it does more than I need. I went in to get a Kindle Fire but found this much more user/app friendly. Now I need to figure our what apps I want on it.

I love it most because I can Skype with my grandkids.

InvertChaos 11-15-2012 09:51 AM

I'll probably end up getting the nexus 7. I don't like how big the 10" tablets are and the nexus 7 seems like just the right size. Plus I like to tinker with android and flash new roms and such.

ESP 11-15-2012 10:49 AM

Did either of you consider the iPad mini instead of the 7? There about the same size I think.

Mr.Bill 11-15-2012 11:16 AM

I didn't consider Apple. I am quickly becoming a fan of Android. We are doing some things in military communications with Android and it does the trick.

They're about the same size but the nexus 7's specs are better and the nexus is cheaper. The nexus has a significantly better screen than the ipad mini and I think twice the amount of ram. Similar processors though. I do with the n7 had HDMI out though.

Disclaimer: I am somewhat of an android fanboy. The only apple product I own and probably will ever own is an iPod nano from 4 years ago.

ESP 11-17-2012 08:31 AM

lol I hear ya. The only thing I have is a nano too from about the same time ago. I bought my girlfriend an ipad 3 for Christmas last year and I mainly use a net book. I've seem to find my self wanting a tablet more and more as of late though and I'm watching/reading many reviews on the ones out. I think the Nexus 10 has better specs than the new iPad4 too. Hmm...

I bought my wife the Samsung Note 10.1

It's nice, I rarely use it.

G-Mike 11-17-2012 08:59 AM

Getting the Samsung Note 10.1 for the wife for xmas. Brother-in-law has one and loves it (and he is a serious techie), Running about $350 right now.

So get the mini now or wait until spring to see if Apple releases a new mini with retina?

I absolutely love my iPhone 4 and have been nothing but happy with its performance and reliability. I've been checking out new iPads but your comment brings me to my one reservation. Apple is absolutely the worst at releasing products they know are inferior. Let's face it, the iPad mini SHOULD be equipped with a retina display. It was planned and designed to be obsolete right out of the box. Does it cost them that much more to use a retina display? I don't know, but the 4,4s and 5 all have retina displays... why shouldn't their newest tablet have the retina?

I'm an Apple addict all the way. Everything I own computer wise is Apple, including our phones, tablets, router, desktops, etc. Whatever is the latest and greatest model from them I pretty much buy. This coming from a guy who's been in IT for 25 years and used to make fun of "Apple People."

I of course love my iPad III but am seriously considering an iPad Mini due to the smaller form factor. Not sure whether I'm going to wait for the next gen mini or not but in the mean time I picked up a Nexus 7 to see how I liked it.

Considering it's a Droid, it's not too bad. iOS is still a better operating system hands down.

InvertChaos 01-21-2013 01:16 PM

I just got a nexus 7 myself, and it is pretty awesome. I like how it integrates with my android phone as well. It's great for casual internetting.

Purely curiosity, but what don't you like about android?

lms1220 01-21-2013 01:16 PM

On my iPad 4 right now :) use it for everything except school. My favorite part is the integration with my MacBook and iPhone

Clunky, not intuitive, old school, not nearly as many apps, especially for tablets. It's not that I don't like it, if iOS didn't exist it would be fantastic. iOS / Apple has it's downsides too but I still think in general iOS is far superior and so is the hardware.

I will say I do like the Nexus 7 w/ Jelly Bean quite well.

Interesting. I agree with you on the lack of tablet apps. What did you find unintuative about it? Seems like everything is either a long press or a swipe away. Also, the Widgets are very innovative IMO. The "app icons on a background that apple has used since 2007. That's old school.

Not exactly sure what you mean but it's just personal taste I guess. iOS is just cleaner, smoother, stabler, more advanced.. in some ways, easer, better looking, etc.

I don't like the fact the Apple has iOS and the apps so locked down but in someways it's a positive.

The good thing is it's all relative and given the price points we can afford to have both. :)

Yep it's good to have competition. It yields innovation :wavey:

I test mobile and tablet OS for about 40% of my job. Personally own and only use Apple products but partially bc PITA to try and use multiple OS for personal use.
If I were to spend my money on a Android product, and I've owned 3 in the past, it would only be for a Nexus device. Android has a lot of pros. Many features that iOS lacks. Certainly if your are mod minded a lot more pros, tho average buyer is not. It is not as uniform and clean as iOS. It tends to feel more rushed. Some features I'm jealous of but I understand Apple's reasoning for not having and tend to agree. But need someone creating those ideas. Innovation. Progress. Some features are more "look at me" and not practical and some are genuinely good.
But my biggest advice is if buying Android get Nexus. Spend some time on a android forum. Don't have to get caught up in rooting and such but just general tips and tricks can be very helpful.

I have had a vizio and currently have an iphone, samsung tablet, and use an ipad2 @ work. My favorite is the samsung, no doubt about it. I also have an older semismart samsung phone, i like it as well.

My shillings.

JDsDream 01-21-2013 07:59 PM

I just purchased the Samsung 8.9-4G. It integrates with both my HP laptop and my HTC phone. It's fast and the graphics are amazing. It's extremely user friendly and easily personalized. I can do just about anything with it that I can do on my laptop and there is no shortage of apps.
By adding the notepad to my account, I paid $79.00 for it after a $100.00 rebate.

Raiderfan001 01-21-2013 10:33 PM

I have an Asus Transformer Infinity. I like that with the keyboard dock it basically makes it a mini laptop and adds more battery life. Since I don't need it to perform intensive programs I've got it underclocked to make the battery last even longer. Easily can get 16 hours out of it. I refuse to buy Apple products. Wish I would have bought stock in them 10 years ago though

This is an old thread re-hash but..

Apple is bringing out the new"er" iPad Mini 2 with retina in March I think. I didn't get the 1st gen release of it for several reasons that looked to be fixed with the upcoming one. Right now my money is on the second gen mini.
