Mounting shovel/axe inside tailgate?

Has anyone done this? I got some quickfist clamps but I'm not quite sure how to mount them. I was going to drill into it but I realized you can't separate the tailgate so I can't secure it with a nut. Any ideas?

What about those big metal things you use to hang something heavy in sheetrock? Like they go in and open up. I will try to find a picture of what im thinking...

That's what I was thinking actually. I'm worried they don't make them small enough though since the screws it takes are #10.

I've actually done this and it is a great setup. I don't have a pic right now but will get one tomorrow. I have an axe, shovel, and saw mounted inside my tailgate.

Using these anchors?

Using the Original Quick fist clamps. They work really well. To mount them, I used self-tapping screws. That is for the axe, the shovel I mounted using a home made bracket and a folding shovel with sheath. I'll get a pic later today...just woke up haha

I can't upload a pic right now, I'll have to upload it on my comp instead of my phone. I'll have to wait till tomorrow

No problem, thanks!

Rubicondon53 11-17-2012 06:49 PM

yeah, good big stainless steel or galvanized sheet metal screws, self tapping or not, either way would work well with the quick fist grips

Sorry for the late response. Work and the holidays have been crazy this past week. So here is what i was talking about. the fireman's axe is held on with quick fist grips secured using 1 1/2" self-tapping screws. The shovel is an army surplus folding shovel. the mount for that i made out of some scrap sheet metal i had. Not to fancy but it gets the job done very well. The saw(which I'm replacing with a better quality one) will be held using a set of quick fist grips as well. Don't mind the tailgate backing looking like its falling off lol. I have to re glue it to the tailgate since i pulled it off

A couple sheet metal screws holding an axe behind my back would worry me in the event of a collision...

I am looking at getting some quick fists to mount a shovel and axe to my tailgate. Anyone ever try to paint them? My wrangler is black, I think it would pop nicely if the clamps could be painted. anyone try this?

Quick Fist clamps. Lot's of vendors sell them. Many sizes available depending on what you want to carry.

I put some on my rear rack to carry my shovel and mattock. You can see them in this pic before I mounted them. They work great.

I done it with quick fists.... I put one of those table leg end caps (like sticky on one side, fuzzy on the other to stop from scratching the floor) on the door so the shovel doesn't rattle... works like a charm! :punk:
