Illegal mods in chicago - front bumpers

I've tried searching for some answers by emailing DOT about after market bumpers. The guy told me he didnt know and he wasnt sure who did.. WTF!!!!!!

Anyway, does anyone know if Stubby bumpers are illegal?

i dont even think you have to have a front bumper at all in illinois.

Not sure about Illinois, but a quick google check will bring you to the official website detailing all of the TX DPS rules for inspection/safety.

Illinois Lift Laws | Vehicle Modification Rules

Best I could do for ya. Not sure how completely accurate this is but at least its something. Looks like you need to have a bumper and the only thing it says is that it has to be a specific height.

Edit: after reading that page, remind me not to move there lol.

Heres what Ive heard. Front bumper has to cover the wheels! so fulll width. I have stubby and no problems. It would have to be a hummer loving police officer to even bother with a ticket for that. It also can only go so high, forget the number at the moment. Also a third brake light is not required. In this state you only need one working brake light, at least thats what my jeep friend cop says

X2. I moved away from Chicago to the PNW earlier this year and man am I glad I did. I couldn't wait to leave for like the last year or so I was there. :hide:

Its really too bad Florida doesnt have more trails and stuff for 4x4's to do. We have almost no restrictions.

Ahh dissing CHI. Im a native so it was my choice to stay. I doubt city cops care about a modded rig.

shanes04wrangler 11-21-2012 08:18 PM

Yea the cops here dont care about anything on your jeep, They are busy doing what there paid to do and thats there job. There looking for drugs and thugs. I love the city just for that, back in metro detroit were i am from they try to get you for anything and every thing.

you need bumpers in IL just got a ticket for it. if you have truck plates you need splash guards too I think the bumper height for Pass. vehical plates it 28.5" or lower(don't hold me to it, its been awhile since I've gotting pulled over for that one).

Redsand 12-26-2012 10:54 AM

I've never been pulled over for having a stubby bumper, but I'm far away from the shat hole of Shitcago.

CJ1048 12-28-2012 03:10 PM

Make sure you ask the officer to show you the law that is being broken...most times he can't. The laws written can be vague at best and don't forget Gross Vehicle Weight comes into play for lift laws.....If you do your research you can beat many tickets that normally go un-checked.
Question: If CanAm Spiders, T-bucket roadsters, older Volkswagen Bugs, etc don't have bumpers covering their tires, how can that be?

GreggFanis 12-30-2012 04:55 PM

If you get pulled over it won't be for bumper's. speeding[haa] or driving like an ass hole get's you stopped! .PS. Be cool and every thing stay's cool. That has been my experience with IL.cop,s Hope this help's
