Security System for a Jeep

Any suggestions on a security system for a jeep. My jeep was broken into early this morning and now I am pissed.:firedevil::firedevil:

What are you guys running out there?

jeeps&comics 07-24-2008 07:03 AM

did they take anything? i just have a tuffy, and keep everything of importance locked in there.... and have a killswitch so they can't take the actual jeep... other than that, i would like to get a 2-way alarm in the future sometime, we'll see

I couldnt tell you the brand, price, or anything really, but a few years ago we had a jeep with an alarm on it that could tell if you stuck you hand in through the perimeter even if the top was off. It was pretty cool cause you could then take the doors off/put the top down and go around town with no worries

^ that's what i've got

it's a Viper (made by DEI) with the motion sensor.

Thanks guys, I will look into it.

No, nothing was taken from the jeep. But in my wifes car was my son's gameboy and 15 games and they got that. :firedevil:

wow..... they stole a gameboy??? what kinda 10 year old thugs do you have runnin around your neighborhood??

tazmann910 07-24-2008 09:25 AM

That is the thing, I know it was some older kids because of the few things that they took.

I hope the fact that I caught them in the act and scared them off will keep them from doing it again.

Glock makes an awesome all around security system! I am sorry to hear about your jeep getting broke into, and them taking your Child's gameboy.

S&W makes a pretty good one as well.

i had an amp stolen a year ago and i have heard mixed reviews on getting an alarm, i would like to get a 2-way with motion sensor

booger, how much did all that cost if you don;t mind me asking?

My best advice is to install a Tuffy console, console liner, glove box, or rear under-seat security drawer. Then keep all your valuables inside one of them and NEVER lock the doors unless you have a hard top and full steel doors. I say not to lock the doors since thieves think nothing of slashing a soft top or vinyl windows to look around inside a Jeep if the doors are locked.

I'll never (!) install an aftermarket alarm into my Jeep as 1) No one pays attention to them when they go off. 2) Thieves know how to disable them. 3) The alarm installers (usually a 19 year old kid) will just screw up your Jeep's wiring 9 times out of 10. 4) Loud exhausts, trash trucks, etc. set the alarms off for way too many false alarms. :)

I agree with the Tuffy Console comment. When my TJ was broken into, they cut the damn side window and stole a bunch of stuff from my console.
I used to lock the half doors... Never again. Nothing of value stays in the jeep and I bought the poor mans Tuffy Console

I had a 91 CJ in 2002. It didn't have an alarm system. A couple of drunk theif's broke into it by slashing the drivers window. They tried to remove the new radio I had just installed. Being drunk they couldn't figure out that all they had to do was to pull straight out on the radio and it would come out. Instead they used a crowbar and bent the dash frame up. They also pulled out the dash wiring harness, broke the glove box off, tore the top off the console door, tore off the emblem on the steering wheel and dented the drivers door. Since I did not have an actual alarm on the jeep I rigged a power line from the door light to the radio so that when you open the door the radio would come on full blast. I was parked in an apartment complex parking lot at a girlfriends house. After a few minutes of the blaring music a nieghbor called the cops and they caught both drunks in my jeep and arrested them. Unfortunatly they had already caused over 3000 in damage. Both drunks recieved 3 years probation and had to pay me for the damages at 50 a month. My CJ was a total loss. I didn't have theft insurance. I was able to splice the wires back together and get it running. I traded it in on a 98 TJ. In my TJ I installed an alarm system that goes off if anyone even reaches into the jeep. It also disconects the starter. I did have to rewire it so that the wires are unreachable. So far in the last 6 years now no one has stolen anything from it. I don't leave anything laying out in the jeep. I put everything in the console and lock it. It does however go off when people get too close to the back when the top is off.

I think that if someone wants what you have they will break into it regaurdless of wheather you have an alarm system or not. The best thing I could think of doing for my jeep is to build a garage and keep it in there. My garage is now complete.

Thanks for the story, what kind of alarm do you have installed on your TJ?

i think it was about $350 installed. DEI offers a lifetime warranty on their products, the shop i go to offers lifetime on their labor :)

Here's my $5 solution:

fits nicely around the brake and clutch pedals:

that will stop someone from driving away with your jeep but it isn't going to slow them down from stealing whats inside. if an alarm goes off it usually scares them away and with a 2 way alarm you will be alerted of a break in even if you cant here the alarm its self.

tj1230 07-30-2008 11:45 AM

Get one of those alarms that once you break the plane of the jeep interior your alarm goes off.*(discussed earlier in this thread)* Then attach it to a set of train horns or ship horns. I really don't see a problem with it.
Just a thought!

Jma20a 07-30-2008 11:52 AM

i would get the motion censer with the alarm and get a train horn to replace the alarms speaker. one of the nice horns those guys use on hornblasters.com

I feel like this thread is an oxymoron. Its a jeep...it probably has one of the most easily accessible interiors in automobile history. Don't leave anything of value in it PERIOD.

tazmann910 07-30-2008 07:51 PM

Thanks for your input on this thread. As you are part right, Jeep is very easy to get into, does not mean that you can put some kind of security on it.

i also vote on a 2 way alarm, i have a 2 way alarm and multiple times, i've gone outside to find either a kid running away or someone that hit my side steps with their door. I would have never heard of the alarm go off without the 2 way.

I've also allways wanted to add one of these but i'm afraid of getting nicely fried on accident. This will scare one away

now what happens when it arks over to any part of the electrical system, it might take a good deal of time replacing every fuse and fixing all the fried wiring. i would rather put a flame thrower under the side steps.

Triple88a 07-31-2008 12:26 PM

a small few k volts tesla coil isnt going to ark from the roof to the radio or other electronics.

Plastic seats with the tesla coil inside the back rest would be perfect :)
