Soft top vs. Hard top
This has probably been asked many, many times before on here.. but I am new to posting to the forum and don't quite have the hang of it yet - sorry in advance!

About a month ago, I purchased a 2010 JKU Sport 4D and am considering a hard top purchase for a 2,000 mile drive from AZ to VA next summer. I have an 8mo and am thinking the hard top would be better for him to travel with. He will be over a little over a year old by summer 2013.

How hard/time consuming is it to remove the soft top, and replace with the hard top? I've never owned a hard top... I live in sunny Arizona and the winters here are mild, to say the least. Current temp around 3pm is hitting 81 and we're still using our A/C during the day.

Other than theft deterrent, better insulation and sound, are there any other great benefits to owning a hard top vs. soft top? I understand they are much heavier and harder to remove/store. Do they get better gas mileage or are they more aerodynamic? Anything?

Thanks a bunch!

Can't say much about fast mileage difference. Easy to remove though. My wife and I take mine off. Storage may be your biggest issue. Not a problem for me. Go test ride a hardtop at the dealer on the interstate to compared noise difference.

Removing the soft top is a piece of cake. On mine, all you needed was a T30 torx socket for the screws in the rear, and the door surrounds come off by hand knobs. 10 minute job.

The hard top has wiper/washer fluid/defrost which is great for rain and snow. Plus, it's a LOT easier to access the cargo area with the hard top. The soft top is only a better solution if you are in a climate that's warm and mostly dry year round.

There are some cheap and easy roof racks for hard tops, and they are more durable. I prefer soft tops, but hard tops have good points.

WXman, I read your post about the paint on your hard top, so thank you again. I honestly think storage is my only issue at this point, as Arizona is both warm and dry pretty much year round, thus ideal for the (tinted) soft top.

Don't know why I didn't think to test a hard top at the time of purchase!!!
