Creating your own NutSert Installation tool for about $2 in any size

Recently I was installing some Crusher Corners from Poison Spyder Customs and one of the rear installation bolts needed either a nutsert or a large hole cut into the tub. I chose the nutsert method as I didn't want a huge hole in the tub but realized that in the large size of the installation bolt I had no way of setting the nutsert.

Luckily I also had the installation kit for the TrailGate which included a provided nutsert kit for both of the sizes of nutserts that were included in that kit but unluckily it wasn't the right size.

After a quick look it seemed like a pretty simple construction:

After a trip to our local True Value hardware store I had the parts to build my own which ended up working pretty well.

The parts to build your own are:
1) Grade 8 half treaded bolt that fits in the nutsert. For mine it was a course thread which surprised me.
2) 2 Washers that fit the bolt. Try to get these as close fitting as you can. Mine was a bit loose and although it worked, it marred the surface of the nutsert a bit.
3) A Coupler that is larger than the bolt that allows the bot to fit through. This will be your holding spot with a large wrench to push down the nutsert onto.

Once you put it together it should look like this.

This worked really well to set those nutserts. A few lessons from the experience I had: It works better with 2 people so one can be focused with the large wrench and keeping everything straight. Otherwise, the nutsert ends up at a weird angle which causes everything to be difficult from there. Don't go crazy with the tightening. You just need to set it not crush it beyond recognition. I found that if you tighten it too much then the threads get a bit bungled which again makes things more difficult.

Use anti seize on the bolt. It wont gull up the treads. :punk:

Yep. I didn't have any problems with the grade 8 but the fasteners were stainless and learned about the anti seize quickly the hard way when I put those in.
