2.5 Tire Size

My grandson has a 97 jeep with stock gearing and a 2.5 four cylinder engine. He is running 30X9.50 tires and it pulls good with that size on it. Fifth gear still gets used on the road with out bogging. My question is can he run a set of 31X10.50 tires without regearing? I have searched and did not find what I was looking for. Thanks Mike

Yes you can. I have a friend who runs those tires on his jeep with stock gears and the 2.5. Pulls just fine!

I have a 2.5 wirh no upgrade other than cold air intake and no gearing work. 6 inch lift and 35x12.50s on 17s. Drives like a champ. Too many people assume their engine and power train can't handle the load and waste fully spend money. Mine is my dd and is mud bogged at least 3 times a month. Have yet to see a problem.

If the 2.5 handles that I think it will handle those 31's ;)

You are wise to be concerned, Mike. The good news is that he can run 31" tires and still have acceptable performance on the freeway. There will be little difference compared to his current 30" tires; if he is happy now, he'll still be happy after the upgrade.

I have owned two 2.5L TJs, both on 31" MT/R tires with the stock 4.10 axle gearing and 5-speed transmissions. They did fine on the highway, with only occasional 4th gear use required for steep hills, or lesser hills with a stout headwind, etc. In the vast majority of situations, everything was great.

I have 31's and that's an exact description of performance with my 2.5 5 speed. Acceptable for cruising, but the big bonus is that your grandson won't be able to get any speeding tickets!:thumb:
