Replacing Flares

Replacing my old grayed oem fender flares with a mint set of used Xenon 6" flat flares... I hear getting the oem flares off is not easy, any tips? What should I be prepared for? Any tools recommended to speed the process?

Anyone have experience with the xenon flat flares? I have all new stainless hardware but I'm assuming is a pretty straight forward process

Any help is appreciated.

depends on if you want to save them or trash them. I trashed mine so I just cut all the screws with a sawsall.

Beach-Bum 12-03-2012 10:13 AM

i read a couple people saying they just cut them off... i tried with sockets first and gave up quickly. Cutting wheel came out, i cut the flares close to the body all around then just cut everything off.

only issue is theres one bolt on each side of the front that i cant cut the backside out of. i cut the head of the bolt off but its threaded. my cutting wheel wont fit on the back. i grinded it down but thats gonna bother me big time.

i gotta clean the jeep off now wipe her down and then start installing the flats. seems like theres almost no room on the inside of the wheelwells for this hardware, should be interesting.

pics coming soon

Carralo1 12-03-2012 01:59 PM

Looking good

Carralo1 12-03-2012 02:02 PM

Did you used to have small plastic mirrors on the sides of the doors?(looks like 2 small holes I can see)

I do on mine and was curious if you knew how to take them off? I can't see how without just breaking them

Beach-Bum 12-03-2012 04:48 PM

i bought the jeep with mirrors on the windshield frame so i can go doorless. i dont know what mirrors were on the door previously. and yes theres two small holes on each doors from where the mirrors used to be i guess. sorry i cant be more helpful

Im anxious to see the flares on, Im the one looking for flares that follow the outline of the rear fenders.Nice job getting the old ones off, I like the rockers blacked out.Can you take pics of the rear ,at this point Im willing to spend the extra if I can find ones that "FIT" the outline of the rear fender well.Keep the pics comming Im in!!!

Beach-Bum 12-03-2012 06:29 PM

89quest, i'll have a bunch of pics up when im done for sure... i have pics of them installed on the guys jeep i bought them from. you want those? once i saw his pics i was sold. plus unlike bushwacker, you dont have to cut anything... this bolts right into stock locations. just check the weather and it looks good so i'll definitely get these on tomorrow! and post pics when im done

Exclusive Wrangler 12-03-2012 06:33 PM

Hey what rocker guards do you have on your jeep if you don't mind me asking...?

tigerblood 12-03-2012 06:36 PM

you may want to read the whole thread. perhaps he said something about his rockers in there...

Beach-Bum 12-03-2012 06:45 PM

idk what brand they are, they were on the jeep when i bought it. apparently the double as rocker armor and steps... i have them set up as steps (dont think my daughter can get in without them) but they can be flipped around to act as rocker armor.

My rocker panel is painted with bedliner, im gonna do custom black diamond plate where i painted black eventually

i yanked my flares off the other day wasnt to bad when i found the cut off wheel worked great on the little plastic nuts,,zipped them all off in 15 minutes and my flare,s are still good as new--lol....if i put flare,s back on they will be tube,s or the ones like you just got..

I have the bushwackers...got them new last year. You don't cut anything, all you do is drill 2 new holes on the front and one in the rear for the extension of the flare. I didn't want to cut anything, so that is why I bought the bushwacker flat flares.

Hmmmm. I read the instructions and I was pretty sure there was cutting involved. Good to know.

I only paid $250 for these used and their in mint condition. Oh and I bought a coworker a $25 bottle of booze for picking it up for me since it was in jersey and I live on long island.

I'm so psyched to do this tomorrow

Beach-Bum 12-04-2012 10:55 AM

Woke up to rain. It's supposed to clear up so maybe I'll start working on the fronts later. I almost want to wait till I can do all 4. But that means after Christmas. We'll see what time I finish my errands

kheiland 12-04-2012 11:38 AM

Look good why type of fenders are those!!

89quest 12-09-2012 03:41 PM

Yes Im still here and have been reading your progress any and all pics are a true blessing at this point.I still haven't got a definative answer on 6" flares that follow the rear fenderwell on an 89yj.Talked to bushwacker, morris and a bunch of others it seems its taken for granted that you cut the rear fenderwell out, or you paint it all black where it shows the side panel thats left showing, under the flare. There must be a 6" flare that follows the rear fenderwell on an 89yj, I just haven't found it yet.

Beach-Bum 12-09-2012 03:57 PM

Wasn't able to install it before I went back to sea. It was raining and my only work space is my driveway

89quest 12-09-2012 06:09 PM

Sorry you were unable to finish, but I'm looking forward to seeing it when you do.Im taking this winter to bring "Little Red" up to snuff a little at a time as the wallet can handle it.Hopefully by then all the lipstick & jewelry will be done..When I start I will post progress with some pics.

Sounds good. It's freezing out so I'm gonna drop my kid off at school and drive to my parents house so I can use their garage. F doing this in my driveway. (I have a 1 car garage which is just storage). Hope to have it all done by noon
