From JK to TJ
 
I am thinking to shift from JK to TJ. I saw this black TJ mostly stock 2004 , 4.0 6 cylinder, 5 speed , black soft top ( in good condition) , 136k miles on it. The dealer is selling for $8995.
Can u guys please suggest if it is good deal and what other things i have to look for. Thank youu

that isn't a bad price, at least in my area. I would take it to a pro and have them check it out. Well worth it, may cost 100 bucks. You can use the info to leverage them to drop the price, if any repairs are needed. Post a link of the jeep if you can.

Here is the link. There are no pics though. I saw the jeep. The exterior is okay. Interior is good and no rust underneath. And it is a 1 owner vehicle.
The vehicle has a mileage of 135k but the carfax reports 29k as of 12/1/12. I did not understand this. The dealer told me it was by mistake. Really????

Is yours a JKU? If it is stay with that, This is coming from a TJ owner :)

The first thing I would check over carefully is the amount of rust on the frame and engine compartment components. Make sure corrosion is very minimal.

Then I would check body parts/seam gaps to determine if there have been any fender benders.

Dealers are good at hiding problems!

Nope moab. Mine is a 2 door. I cudnot afford the payments but do really want to drive a jeep and nothing else. :)

Thanks dextreme. I chcked for rust. But it is very minimal. I didnot check for the seam gaps. Will do that

Good plan then, to me a TJ is better then a 2dr JK, but the wheelbase on the JKU makes it better than a TJ.

I don't know your budget, but you could try to find an 04-06 unlimited. It will be roomier than the small TJ's.

Don't trust Carfax 100%. That's a big rule of used car buying.

Sure. I will try to get hold of an expert and will let him check the TJ. I am all excited again for new jeep and also to drive stick.

I just don't trust used dealers either. However a friend just got a nice 2007 JK from a used car dealer that was a great deal and loaded with the right goodies, but I think it was an exception.

When I was looking at TJ's many of the dealers had bought them from an auction. The TJ's had been bounced around the country trying to be sold. Many of them had bad salt corrosion. Many of them had bondo. Many of them had wacky 3+ body lifts or other wacky lift setups. One had a dead rat wrapped around the dipstick. Other TJ's had plastidip on them that screamed..."previously owned by a noob". LOL

The good thing about this TJ is that it had only one owner and was in lynchburg, VA all thru the years. And had min rust under the hood and body. Will update you all when i got it checked with a mechanic

Might truly be a mistake. 129K? Is that Jan 12, 2012 or December 1st?

I bought a one-owner 2002 with 103K miles and it has been (knock-on-wood) trouble free for 10K miles now. I think if an owner keeps a Jeep that long, it's probably a "good one." I had to put a couple $K into mine when I got it though. The clutch had already been done, but I had all the fluids changed, rear differential needed to be rebuilt, new shocks all around, new tires. It adds up quick. Sure you don't want to keep that JK? :)

The carfax reports was 29,111 on dec 1st,12. And the odometer reads 136,540. I asked the dealer and he told me that it might be a mistake. Not sure whats wrong here.

I really want to keep my JK if i can afford it. But i cud not as of now. I wish i could. 😞

Wheel base on a JKU is better then a TJ? Didn't know that, I always thought the Jeeps strength in wheeling was from the short wheel base. Am I wrong then?

It really depends on the terrain. The longer wheelbase makes climbing ledges easier and it will have a nicer ride, the shorter wheelbase has a higher breakover angle and will be able to negotiate tighter terrain.

Maybe its just me but any Wrangler longer than the TJ is fugly. jmo

Yea it's just you. The LJ looks more proportional than a TJ. Specially with bigger tires. I say go for the LJ. I love mine and would never choose a JK over it.
