Calico/Doran Loop - Saturday 1/12

Saturday, January 12, 2013 10:00am

Doran Scenic Drive Loop, clockwise (up Doran Canyon, down Odessa Canyon). The days are short, so time-permitting we'll stop at the gatekeeper AFTER completing the loop, and anyone wanting to take on the gatekeeper can do so at that time. I just don't want to spend so much time at the gatekeeper first thing, then not have enough time to complete the loop before running out of daylight. I've spent a couple hours at the gatekeeper in the past, watching others take a half hour each to get through.

If no one is interested in doing the gatekeeper, we may have time to make the side trip to Wall Street Canyon Overlook.

The gatekeeper is very difficult, but has a bypass. Everything else on the trail is moderate to difficult, but most do NOT have a bypass. Please be aware, the rocks on this trail will likely leave some beauty marks on your purdy wheels.

Requirements/Recommendations:
- PLEASE NO DRINKING ALCOHOL ON THE TRAIL.
- Front and rear tow points required.
- Rock rails required.
- Skid plates recommended on lifted Jeeps, required on stock height Jeeps.
- At least a little lift recommended.
- CB radio highly recommended.

Stock Jeeps can make it through (except through the gatekeeper), but you'll need skid plates because you WILL use them as well as your rock rails. You'll need to choose your lines carefully, and even then you may still need a tug or two.

Newbies have done this trail, but it will be challenging for someone with zero offroading/rock crawling experience, especially if you're also in a stock Jeep.

For other people's comments regarding requirements and trail difficulty, see:

It looks like everyone will be doing this as a day run, but if anyone would like to camp, there's paid reserved camping at Calico Ghost Town Regional Park which has toilets, water and showers, and there's free first-come-first-served primitive camping all along the canyon road leading up to the gatekeeper. Both options are RV- and trailer-accessible. There's also primitive camping at many spots along the trails.

It's going to be cold, with a high of only 45F, so dress accordingly.

Itinerary:

Pack a lunch to eat on the trail, and gas up before meeting up.

We'll be on CB Channel 12.

34.939940,-116.859208 Doran Scenic Drive Trailhead - Enter here, then drive up the canyon to the meet-up spot/staging area.

34.943151,-116.858821 10:00am - Meet-up near the beginning of the gatekeeper bypass road, where we'll air down.

We'll break for lunch probably at Bismarck Mine.

If you want GPS tracks ahead of time, here's a compilation of several GPS tracks I put together of most of the trails in the area.

Just curious when the "The narrow shelf road on Odessa Canyon" pic was taken? Those small rocks at the dropoff are no longer there. Since all of them are gone, someone had to have removed them to make it more puckerfull.
Not that it is a bad thing. Makes it one of the highlights of the trip.

That picture was taken 3 years ago, and that was the only time I ever saw rocks stacked up there.

See below, quoted from the first post. So shall I put you on the "going" list?

For this run everyone must have both front and rear tow points, and rock rails. A CB radio is also highly recommended.

suicideking 12-05-2012 12:17 AM

I'm in! Been wanting to do Calico again.

DaK 12-05-2012 07:53 AM

Put us in...

OBTW, there are no bypasses except for one and that is just before table topping at that top where the mines are.

We have done this trail without lockers but were built with 35's and such. STOCK Rubi's can do this trail with no problems. You will bang, you will use your rock rails so, if you don't want to hear that scratchin and scrapin, this is not the trail for you. This trail will present some great challenges and is a fun time.

We can help spot/lead or whatever ya need. Won't be camping.

OP- Did not see a meet time. This trail can take as little as 3 hrs to run if all goes well.

Oh what a way to start the new yr. :punk::dance:

Yes, and I should also point to everyone that you will likely get some rock rash on your wheels from this trail.

It was right here. 10:00am at the staging area. I added it at the top as well.

Day run for me.

I'll write more later, but agree with what you and others have said about requirements.

Armor is HIGHLY suggested. Calico has LOTS of jagged rocks and will destroy anything underneath that is not protected...

On my first trip there I was on 2.5" lift with 33's, open diffs. I made it through but took some damage.

Although it can be done on open diffs, you will have to use more gas and will do more damage.

My Damage list from the first trip:
Alignment completely out of whack
OEM steering stabilizer broken (replaced with aftermarket and relocated)
Tie rod bent (Replaced with Synergy)
Rear driveshaft boot torn by contacting evap skid (2012+)(haven't replaced yet)
Lots of wheel and rail rash

On a JK, I'd suggest:
Diff covers
FULL skid protection
Evap relocation or skid. If you have the factory skid, relocate to the left a bit
One locker
Relocate Steering stabilizer

I'm very anxious to do this trail again since I did struggle last time on open diffs but did make it. This time I'm locked with 35's so should be much more fun.

Although it is a difficult trail, it's not the difficulty that will get you: It's the jagged rocks that are everywhere and will tear things apart. I'd say Johnson Valley Bullfrog was more difficult. However, doesn't do as much damage because the rocks are more rounded and not jagged like Calico.

DaK and suicideking, thank you for your comments regarding requirements and trail difficulty. I referenced your posts in the first thread so that others will be able to find them more easily. :thumb:

I'm going to say yes, but tentatively. I'm doing volunteer tax preparation, and they may schedule mandatory training during some January weekends...but until I find out otherwise, I'm in.

Put me down as a maybe. I'm trying to get there but work is keeping me way too busy and it may get worse.

Hey Armand, as I recall the rocks weren't there in march when we had the M&G there. I just got back from the weekend there and the rocks are back and very nicely stacked like in the picture. Takes a bit of the pucker factor away, especially for you JK guys....:)
