The jeep has a 3 speed manual. What type of mpg should I expect to get and also, would that year come with powerstearing??

a 71 CJ5 came with a Buick V6 225 odd fire not a even fire 231

no powersteering unless the engine was changed to the 231 then maybe it has PS.

exactly..good engine..I never checked the mileage on mine..kaiser bought that engine from buick in the mid 60's and it was available in jeeps through 1971

Mileage will depend on both tires and diff gears, and whether there is an OD installed. My 68 with the 225, 4.88, OD, and stock tires (H78-15?) got a relatively consistent 18 mpg. Best tank I can remember was 22 mpg. That is all on-road. Low range off-road is probably more like 10 to 12 (or less) mpg.

If it doesn't have an OD, it is a very worthwhile investment with a V6. Makes a much better highway rig, especially if it has 4.88's.

When my dad had the '71 (from 1973 - 1991) all stock (V6, 3-speed, 3.73 no OD, it got 19 mpg on the highway.

Power steering was never offered on a V6-equipped CJ from the factory.

Power steering can be retrofitted to the 225 V6 using PS pump brackets from early to mid-80s V6 and V8 Buicks. Brackets for the steering box-to-frame can be fabricated or purchased from specialty sources.

The one I had would vapor lock when it got too hot, which was usually when I was in the middle of trying to climb something. It absolutely would not re-start until it cooled down. A mechanic told me that there was a spacer kit for the carburator that would fix the problem, but I got rid of it instead.

I have owned my 68 (with the 225) since early 69 (titled as a 69) and to date, it has never vapor locked a single time. If you had that problem, there was likely at least one of several possible problems: obstruction in fuel lines/tank, bad fuel pump, a non-factory reroute of the fuel line that got too close to the exhaust, or perhaps a stuck, closed, heat control valve on the right side exhaust manifold.

The spacer kit would have likely had a minimal, if any, effect on the problem.

My 1966 CJ-5 Tuxedo Park with a 225 Dauntless V-6 with out OD gets about 12-15 MPG. I run 15" wheels with stock tires. Not much highway use, mostly around town. I flat tow it to long distance events.
